In the case where English is your primary language but you're watching a film/tv series in another language you can speak.

Do you use the same subs as the spoken language or do you still use english subs?

Tbh when streaming on netflix/prime I have subs on for all English shows just in case I miss something, but I do switch sub languages over for some foreign stuff.
But I do have acquaintances who will watch Japanese stuff with English subtitles even though they are perfectly fluent in Japanese.

Which do you pick assuming you actually enable the subtitle option.

on a side slightly related note, my mother is a native spanish speaker and didn't learn english until 20 years into her life

she said she actually thinks in English now, I found that pretty interesting.
