I am angry about that. But the fact remains if the perpetrator wasnt allowed to be on the street selling weed the kid might be still alive.

This is definately white privilege, but two wrongs don't make a right and I agree throwing away the key on a minor for something like this isn't really productive for our society.

Most kids of color should get passes like this, but we shouldn't retroactively over punish this kid because we think kids of color would get shitty sentencing...

Yeah, this isn't how our justice system actually works. It's based on perceived threat to society, which is based on probability of repeat offense.

It has never been based on "eye for an eye" which is barbarism.

It's all contextual. He's a minor, I'm sure when the kid stole from him and he tried to take the stolen illegal goods back the kid fought back, and things escalated to the stabbing.

Really, prison should be for people we have reason to believe are a threat to society and will be repeat offenders. At this young of an age, hopefully the punishment doled out is enough of a wake up call to make him never sell drugs or get involved with such type of activity again.

Let's take a look at another murder by a 16 year old in Chicago shall we.

Dimitri Buffer was convicted in 2010 of shooting into a vehicle on Chicagos South Side, killing 25-year-old Jessica Bazan. Prosecutors argued he mistakenly believed the car belonged to a gang rival. During the resentencing hearing in February, Cook County Circuit Judge Thaddeus Wilson recalled fielding questions from jurors about why such a young person was facing trial in adult court and acknowledged the heavy weight of the case given Buffers age. Jurors found 16 year old Buffer guilty and Wilson sentenced him to 50 years in prison, 25 years for the murder and another mandatory 25 years for committing the crime with a firearm. In his lengthy and at times emotional ruling Tuesday, Wilson acknowledged that he had settled on the new sentence just moments before he took the stand.

In fact that sentence by the judge was so bad this happened in 2020.

A Chicago man was resentenced on Tuesday to serve 25 years in prison for a murder he committed at age 16, more than a year after the Illinois Supreme Courts landmark ruling in his case triggered additional sentencing protections for juvenile offenders serving mandatory prison terms of more than 40 years.

Guess what color Buffer was?
