The timestamp on the text message is shy of 9 PM. The Tornado Warning for Edwardsville, IL (where the warehouse is) was issued after 2AM the same night. Amazon's decision was made 5 hours before the tornado happened. Everyone could have made it home well before the tornado easily if Amazon allowed it.
If that's the case then fuck Amazon. Well, fuck Amazon anyway, but yeah

The text says 8:22 and the tornado touched down at 8:35, so it's safe to say they were under warning at the time and nobody should go outside.
The line above also says he'll be home after the storm. Certainly sounds like it was the safety procedure keeping him there rather than simply not being allowed to leave work.

As far as I can tell, its 10 minutes or so, unlike hurricanes that form out in the ocean and takes time to arrive, tornados tend to just form and it is very hard if not impossible to predict and we hide.
But what I mean is when the warning is issued, it's already formed and possibly rampaging. A watch is like the warning before the warning. Warning means "here it is, get to shelter NOW"

ITT, people who don't know how tornadoes work or what precautions to take.

What's important to discover however is the timeline, when the storms started storming. Even that isn't easy to make a decision though, tornadoes can appear when all hell has broke loose or before rain started falling.

Considering the timing I can see it but no one is going to cry if the families win their suit.

Reuters just quotes what Amazon says about when the warning arrived and when the tornado arrived. It is possible. Amazon's case would be that workers running to their cars and trying to leave would have compromised anyone trying to enter the building for shelter.

Do you even know how tornados work? You do NOT outrun a tornado, it can move in any direction it wants to and you do not get hours of warning for a tornado. You get minutes. I live in IL and while I luckily have not been in a tornado, been in enough tornado safety classes either for school or work to know you do NOT go outside. Run in side if you are outside, do not stay in your vehicle, and if you are stuck outside, lay flat on the lowest part of the ground you can get to.

Just wondering, do people really think tornado warnings are hours in advance or what? You get around 10 minutes of warning, which is used to get inside the nearest building, get deeper inside away from windows.

You generally do get warnings hours in advance that there "might" be a tornado but I have never ever ever ever seen anyone change their plans because of it. Nobody gives a shit until touchdown is confirmed.

From where I live, it is around 10 minute or so forwarning. It is still get the fuck to shelter or any building you can as fast as possible. Do not continue driving or whatever, head to the closest building cause thats your highest chance of survival.

You get watches hours in advance, a warning means the potential tornado producing cell is getting close and to take shelter.

Cause its more often wrong than correct. Meteorologists can't predict tornados. They just can predict severe storms, which can form a tornado, but also probably wont form one. If people think they predict rain wrong, tornados are worse.

As someone who has been in a tornado that I had no idea was barreling right at me, you're not safer outside, nor should you ever play "catch me if you can" by attempting to drive away from it.

First of all tornadoes can be really damn fast and catch you quickly. Figure in panicked driving and the possibility of causing an accident or getting hit by debris.

Plus, at night it's even more dangerous because you could drive right into it.

Is being indoors safer? In a sense, yes. But only if it's a secure area.

Not allowing people to leave during a tornado warning is reasonable.

But not actually having an meaningful tornado preparedness or shelters in a large lightweight building is not. I can get why the guy wanted to take his chances with the storm.

The debris can fling at you at literally any angle like a yoyo string broke while you were swinging it in a circle overhead.

Even tiny things can be devastating when thrown by a tornado. There are things like plastic straws that pierce trees and rock.

No it is not. You clearly watch too many movies and have never been to tornado safety training before. You always head to the closest building and get inside. If there are no buildings nearby, you lie flat in a ditch or whatever lowest ground you can get to. Driving is the worst option.

If youre outside when a tornado approaches, find shelter quickly
  • If there is no shelter nearby, go to a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine and lie flat. Protect your head and neck with an object or with your arms. Avoid areas with many trees.

Attempting to race a tornado is never a good idea. Tornadoes can change direction, speed, can randomly launch debris, and in some situations you can't even see it if it happens to be rain wrapped, meaning you could drive right into it and notknow until it's too late.

All the ditches around here would become flooded in minutes and then you're dealing with drowning, hypothermia, and being buried under shit that gets shoveled into the ditch. They're not safe places to be even when there's no tornado. They exist to funnel water into drainage streams around here.

This is an issue of, they did not have a proper storm shelter, and were not enforcing safety protocols and drills for such a situation, and honestly it seems the whole region was woefully unprepared for this.

But fuck the corporation; I'm serious, don't use any of these logical arguments to help a corporation, they don't deserve us to be fair. They should be sued out the ass and we should all support it. Fuck the corporation
