Yeah like I thought. As someone that rode out a tornado in a literal ditch in West TN I can tell you they are definitely safer than standing in the open. Lol wtf do you think people driving on a highway are going to do. Just park their car and stand in the open like dumbasses

Under a highway is a safeish place. It's not exactly what I'd call a ditch though.

Question. Is Amazon not ultimately liable given they died on the job? Or would this be something they would insure for?

I'm in the northeast, so usually our deal is snow and ice and businesses do have to clear for that or they're liable.
I feel fairly confident the laws are designed to protect corporations like Amazon in a case like this

You could try actually reading the topic. Several people have given valid legit reasons as to why you don't leave a building during a tornado. I get that people like you have a raging hate boner for corporations, but this was the right call and SOP basically anywhere that gets tornadoes. And an employer cannot force you to stay or do anything really. I really doubt they had goons guardian the doors.

Bad idea. The structure of the overpass just focuses the winds beneath it.

They're liable for the death regardless. It's just a matter of how much punitive damages can be applied at this point for not having proper tornado safety shelter.

Pro-tip here. If you're driving on a road and there is a tornado coming get in that ditch. Don't stand in the open unless you want to die

All the training I have taken says you do not want to be under a highway. You want to be lying flat in a ditch or other low ground and cover your head.

Acts of God usually arent covered but I'm sure they have a policy to cover it

But during a tornado warning you dont scatter to a bunch of hollow tinny and plastic tubes on a road. It's quite possible more people would have dies trying to get out of the parking lot.

By and large the winds aren't the real danger it's the flying debris. I would think the number of people who die because they themselves got scooped up in the wind is pretty small.

No. If the building was made to substandard specs meanimg not desined to reasonably withstand structural damage, like we often see in India, then yes there is a degree of negligence there. If the building was up to code, it's a freaking tornado, there's only so much we can do to protect against nature. This would almost certainly he coverlet and classified as an "act of god" (yes that is the actual term).

Living in IL and no one closes during a tornado watch, not even schools. None of the schools I have been to had shelters either, you hide in the hallways away from the windows.

So basically the entirety of the Midwest should just shut down 1-5 days/week during tornado season? Do you have any idea how common tornado watches and warnings are here?

Yes, and I am saying non-tornado prepared facilities should. Lives are more important. Schools should be able to work remote for the day if they have to. Same for most jobs.

with a tornado that close leaving would probably be more dangerous. it was at night, not during the day where you could see its path easier

if they had let people leave and the tornado went through a block over it would be "why couldn't they stay in the big safe warehouse"

oh yeah a storm watch is different, and somewhere with that many employees should definitely have a shelter or at least a more well constructed area than what warehouses are normally made out of

FYI the warehouse did have a shelter, but only on one side.

The area designated as a safe space was located on the north side. There wasnt a similar space on the south side, Nantel said.

I don't know. OSHA is investigating, but even if they find no fault you seem pretty hellbent at somehow making this to be an at-fault situation.

What made you say they didn't have a proper storm shelter in your earlier post? Did you read that somewhere, or are you just making things up as you go?
