I can't remember the last time I even bought a PC game at full price. Fallout 4 probably.

Honestly this. NES, SNES, N64 were even 60-75 back then for experiences not longer than a few hours, so games have actually come down in price and thus why DLC became a thing. That said I rarely buy a game at full price with so many on going sales.

Both of those were released on expensive solid-state cartridges, while PS1 games were regularly $40.

Digital downloads have a marginal cost of essentially nothing, give or take the storefront's cut. It's a wonder Squeenix doesn't have its own storefront and superfluous launcher yet.

I mean, companies like EA and activision have had de-facto $80 pricing for years now. You only get a cut down stripped out version of the game for $60. You need to buy the $80 "deluxe edition" to get full content, and then there's usually a $100 "gold" or "complete" edition to get all the DLC.

I exclusively game PC and I never buy AAA games for more than $20, because I'm willing to wait 2 - 3 years on them. Why buy them early? More expensive, more bugs, less content.

I unironically agree with this in regards to gaming and also most other things. If it's bad enough for us to complain but still buy it, it's not bad enough yet.

I can see $70 making sense for physical copies of games, but for digital versions, the company makes a ton more pure profit since they don't have to worry about creating and distributing thing thing. If they started $70 physical $60 digital, I wouldn't take issue with it

Publishers have been trying to use Xbox Series and PS5 to justify jacking up the price to $70 for about a year. This is the first time I've seen them try to do this with a PC port tho

one part of me is thinking it's probably good that games are getting more expensive considering the amount of work that goes into them and how we constantly hear stories of developers being extremely stressed and overworked and etc

but the other part of me is thinking that already a lot of the $60 games don't look very appealing to me at that price and bumping them up to 70 or 80 is definitely not helping things on that front

Yet, the lesson learned has never been "stop over-engineering games!" despite a couple decades of indies getting more adoration and attention than "Gray/Brown Zombie Shooter #531124" that somehow runs like ass on that $1000 GPU you finally managed to find.

They probably realise that PC gamers are cheap as fuck, and will only buy a game when it's on sale. Seeing as sales are dictated by the percentage of the fully listed price, they'll still earn more money even if they have the game 35 to 50% off. The games never goes down from its full price MSRP. Fucking Octopath Traveler has some of the weirdest and most obscene full pricing that I've seen. It's almost $90 CAD. What the fuck?
