Which of these two options do you prefer for random selection?

Just curious

Makes things interesting. Sorta like how MTG not all decks are equal, but some can beat others. Like a Death Shadow deck's number one counter is the cheapest deck list so its pretty common. Still fun if you go against it.

ok well, voted #2 since it's better but missed "playing a game with other people". yes, playing competitively unfortunately needs more balance. but single player games can be way better when they're mildly imbalanced.

beating a top tier faction with a bottom tier faction is the ultimate win... it's kinda like Handicaps in golf

So is this about cards and stuff? Because honestly my first thought went to WoW where factions were most definitely not balanced. Even on PvE servers most were heavily biased towards one faction with the population on pvp servers typically being over 90% on a single faction.

This is a difficult question, as there is the rather accurate to reality joke about rock paper scissors where rock asks for paper to be nerfed for being op but asserts scissors are perfectly balanced. Homogenization is boring and attempts at balance typically only result in homogenization. My faction based gameplay experience is almost exclusively world of warcraft where whining about balance resulted only in homogenization and attempts at balancing factions themselves failed because people don't want to be balanced they want to win.

I think it would depend on the game. One could argue that deliberately making factions unbalanced = difficulty levels, but that would still be a matter of balance if you wanted it to work out properly.

The only way to ensure prefect balance is make everything the same, that is a pretty cop out way of balancing though.

Some games achieve balance through a rock/paper/scissors thing.

While balance is an ideal, I don't think it's achievable and, honestly, I'm not sure it's as interesting. I'd rather see a few stronger than average factions and some weaker ones.
