I think it was ok. The weapons and companions made it really fun for me. The game really needed more dev time though.

It's tragic because the engine was basically perfect for stealth action... but there was very little other than the same small handful of mission types for like 30 hours.

Every few missions you might get a glimpse of something cool, but never cool enough to make it feel like a genuine MGS game. It always kinda felt like a tech demo with a placeholder of a story that never got a second writing pass.

Never forget the infamous jeep ride during which the main villain of the game sits across from the main protagonist for eight solid minutes and monologues... while the main character says literally zero words. And is looping his "sitting in helicopter" idle animation the whole time.

That shit was borderline insulting.

Skyrim is an 8 out of 10

Subtract the score of Oblivion (10/10)

And the game ends up feeling like a 2.

Doesn't help that Dark Souls was there to deliver a finishing blow in Kalameet. I actually hold a special place for Alduin in my heart as being one of the worst nemeses in fiction. As far as dragons go at least, Alduin & his pack are incredibly dull. You fight one dragon and you've fought them all. Minecraft did a better job.

I don't think I've ever really been that disappointed in a game. Nothing that went from hype to "wow this is garbage" once I sat down to play it.

Cyberpunk out of those. Like I wasn't expecting some crazy hype of anything. But I was expecting more than a mediocre open world game held together by duct tape.

How on earth can a game released in 2020 have worse pedestrian AI than GTA3?

No Man's Sky was hyped to the fucking moon and failed spectacularly to live up to it. I still remember friends of mine getting refunds through Steam.

I was speaking personally.

Cyberpunk 2077.

I never bought into the hype of the other games, but 2077 was being developed by the developer of one of the best games of the 2010s, had a massive budget and a clear vision. Then it came out, and even when it runs well, it just feels hollow and pointless. Mankind Divided was a better cyberpunk game, and it wasn't even very good.

Tough choice between Fallout 76 and GTA trilogy. Cyberpunk 2077 is also a good contender (the winner in fact, if you played it on console)

Fully expected 76 & Cyberpunk to suck

For me, it was GTA V. In fact nothing I've played comes even close to as disappointing. And that's an understatement. One because I followed every new detail about the game being dropped from the first information released. I was hyped for a long time. Eventually some game play was revealed that had me concerned, but it was just a clip. Then I played the game and it was shockingly bad. I gave it a chance for a week, but it was simply trash. There was a cheat that could be entered that made the game at least playable, but I'm not going to constantly activate a cheat to make the game somewhat okay.

I'd have said watch dogs but fallout 76 didn't even have a half of a half finished game at launch. And cyberpunk was a broken mess from what I saw. Gotta love when devs promise more than they'll ever actually deliver on even with updates.

Halo the Master Chief Collection should be one of the choices. Easily my most disappointing game ever. It was supposed to be the best game ever. Wed all be playing it for the next ten years. My and my brother bought Xbox Ones just for that game, we were gonna play through all the campaigns together. And then the multiplayer just DIDNT work. At ALL. For a week. For a month. A year later it still didnt work. How could they drop the ball so hard?

This. It doesn't help that pretty much all the cutscenes were in the trailers so there was nothing new in the game apart from an empty open world.

Cyberpunk considering CDPR was a fan favorite and pro-consumer gaming company and the "demo" looked fucking incredible (before it was revealed to be prerendered). Getting all the cool paper swag and stuff on the deluxe launch edition plus the installation size itself shattered my ceiling of expectations...but then I played the game on PS4...and never felt more betrayed and sad that they pulled a Bethesda on the world.

Nothing will top that, maybe in a clown universe where Nintendo releases Metroid Prime 4 and it's a 3 hour mess full of quicktime events

I still remember when Duke Nukem finally came out but it had been such a long time waiting I didn't care anymore and just laughed at all the horrid scores it got.

From that list it's Cyberpunk hands down.

I think the first Fable was the most massively disappointing. As a kid, with powerful new consoles emerging, you believed all the hype surrounding that game.

But from that list, Cyberpunk was the most disappointing for me. Witcher 3 is my favorite game ever behind Chrono Trigger, so I actually believed they could pull off what they promised and deliver another masterpiece. I do want to go back to it someday; like the first Fable, it's still a good game that you have to go into forgetting all the exaggerated promises and hype.

Close second would be Mass Effect: Andromeda. It's not really a terrible game, I have about 20 hours of fun with it before it becomes a slog and a chore. I don't think Bioware games work very well in vast, open world settings; they need that semi-open world that still keeps the experience somewhat linear and directed.

I think of that list it's probably No Man's Sky. Fallout 76, Mass Effect Andromeda, Cyberpunk, they all had warning signs. For No Man's Sky there was no warning that the game was going to be completely devoid of so many of the systems and content they talked about. It isn't the worst game on the list, or the biggest difference between hype and quality, but in terms of most disappointing on launch day? I think it wins.
