its not even close to the worst game in the series. 12 and 15 are far worse than it, because of the games switching directors mid production and everything getting muddled and not making sense. Then you have 3 for the NES which is really hard to get through.

I definitely prefer 3, 12, and 15 to 13. 13 is probably better designed than 15, but I anyways found 13 to be incredibly boring. Boredom is the best thing I can't look passed in a video game.

For 3, I played the 3D PSP version which I think is easier than the other versions. That game was plenty of fun. I was glad that stat growth was not tied to whatever job you are when you level.

Edit: and FF7R is what 13 failed to be. A master piece.

I enjoyed the gameplay / battle system of XIII-2 and XIII-3 but thats about it. Didnt care for the stories or characters.

13 is near the bottom for me, but I like it more than 2 (which I did not like) and 3 (which I found to be annoying more often than not), and 15 (which wasn't very fun at all). I like 13-2 the best of that trilogy.

12 is light years beyond 13.

For me it isn't. 12 while beautiful and had some great side characters, really lacked in the story department. Which for me as a story nut, made me sad. 13 while bad had a cohesive story that made sense. Lightning trying to save her sister. 12s story changed so often it was hard to keep up, and there wasn't a lot of character development outside the side characters. While we knew who the main villains were, they showed up so little in the actual story that when the final encounter came around I literally felt nothing. No feeling of "I'm finally going to put an end to you". It really is the same issue I had with FF15 and Wrath of the Lich King, though WOTLK I at least played through WC3:TFT so I knew who Arthas/Lich King was and his background.

Meanwhile, side characters like Larsa and Ravus have more time put into their stories than the actual party, so I grew attached to them. And characters like Iris grabbed my attention while Luna might as well have been Aerith'd in the first act.

Keep in mind, that I played the original releases, not the ones that came afterwards with enhanced features or dlc. I really feel like Ashe needed the Laguna treatment during 12. In between cliffhangers in the game, the story should have shifted to her and Biggs and Wedge(generic FF characters) to build up her as a character and try and regain trust within her kingdom.

It didn't help that both 12 and 15 had director shifts mid production.

No it didnt. 90% of the world building including the proper meanings if important terms are only in the in game encyclopedia. And nope the story is not Lightning trying to save her sister past the prologue.

Hope gripping with his dad.
Sazh dealing with his son.
Snow dealing with being a loser.
Vanille dealing with the whole plot.

Almost every character intentionally and obviously has a full arc. I feel like FF13 haters don't like the characters from the get go, as is obvious by Snow and Hope hate, and can't deal with that in a RPG based walking sim.

Again, at least 13 has a coherent story. And, no, info about the Fal'cie and l'cie is not all hidden in the menu, though background about Cocoon is. 15 is literally unfinished. 12 is really rough, too.

And 2 is, by far, the worst. It's so bad most casual FF fans don't even know what's wrong with it.

The walking sim part is also a huge issue as well as the leveling system not opening up until chapter 11 of 13. Oh and no side quests apart from go here and kill that quests.

The combat in 13 is fun and engaging (once it opens), the combat in 15 is stilted and mashy.
The story in 13 is much more engaging, the story in 15 isn't even in 15.

I like 13 more and honestly think it's a more complete game. I think 15 is more popular because the start is more fun. What's better is subjective.

And 15 has the opposite of a corridor problem. So much of the world is empty and pointless. The last chapter is worse than any part of 13, 13's bad parts are just heavily front loaded.

13 is nowhere near as bad as many make it out to be.

It's by no means a good game, but a serviceable average game. The characters have arcs and actions/thoughts outside of the main plot, and the main plot is at least followable if not the greatest story about.

Being a corridor for far far too long is definitely a fair criticism though, along with many others.

15 is better than 13 but not without some inexcusable issues. Having to rely on supplemental material and DLC to get the entire story (and out of sequence unless you find a watch/play guide) really broke the narrative. This is a jRPG. Long cutscenes come with the genre. The movie and anime episodes could have been seamlessly integrated, and the DLC should have been main content given how so many crucial plot points play out in em.

13 was ok but boy were the sequels something.

13 is the only game on the series I have tried multiple times and simply cant get through. The disjointed story telling kills it for me, because it doesn't show you why you should care about someone or something until well after what's happened.

Gameplay also didnt grab me, but I gave it a legit shot. Got to where the game really opens up, but I was so burnt out by that point.
