When people talk about 15, they really need to make the distinction as to whether they're talking about 15 at launch, or the Royal edition of 15 plus dlc. 15 the base game is significantly worse than 15 the finished product.

I do like the combat system in 13 (though 13-2 improved it), but the problem to me is that

1) There is little to no effort to vary it up. With exceptions you're basically doing the same exact thing from the moment you get access to basic classes till the end of the game. When you learn the ultimate abilities you incorporate those into the combat if you want to and that's a minor change, but that's basically it. Enemies do no require different tactics. It's the same thing. I think there's a robot enemy type that basically takes no damage till staggered, unlike the other enemies that take very little damage till staggered, but that's hardly a large, or even minor difference.

2) Undeniably the combat in 13 takes control away from the player. Now, I like this. I think manipulating party AI through paradigm shifts works well. But if you're going to have a combat system where you take control away from the player, it shouldn't be the game where the player also has no control outside of combat. There's only so much being carried forward without personal input I can take in a game and FF13 oversteps that line basically in the first 4 hours and just keeps going like the Juggernaut.

While we knew who the main villains were, they showed up so little in the actual story that when the final encounter came around I literally felt nothing. No feeling of "I'm finally going to put an end to you". It really is the same issue I had with FF15 and Wrath of the Lich King, though WOTLK I at least played through WC3:TFT so I knew who Arthas/Lich King was and his background.

As part of the expansion, he showed up in small snippets of side quests and a couple dungeons as well as briefly part of Wrathgate and at the end of Trial of the Crusader. But in the main story patches he shows up very little. He was missing from 3.1 which focused on Ulduar, and only showed up at the end of 3.2.

Obviously 3.3 was all about him, but Icecrown Citadel was small in comparison to Ulduar, and imo felt really underwhelming. Like it should have been bigger than it was, considering it was the main raid of the expansion, but I digress different issues altogether.

I really, really tried to like 13. I've played it four times. But it's just dreadful. There are precisely two likeable characters in the game. The plot is an incoherent mess, even with the encyclopedia. Combat is okay at best.

It looks stunning (to this day) and the music is great. Those are the only real positives.

13 was a cycle of "please let this section be over and let me see a scene" into "oh God why is this scene so bad let it be over."

It took me a year to beat and I only stuck with it because not beating a game disqualified your opinion on it back then. I bet I would like it more though if I skipped all the scenes and dived into the battle system. Maybe start with a late game save.

I recently replayed Kingdom Hearts 3 and did exactly that and the game was a thousand times better because of it. It also helped that Critical Mode exists now so the combat isn't embarrassingly easy and simplistic like Proud mode was on release.
