"A federal court on Monday temporarily halted the Biden administrations COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health workers at hospitals that receive federal funding.
The ruling by a Missouri-based federal judge applies to health care employees in the 10 states that sued to block the administrations Nov. 5 rule. Those states are Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
U.S. District Judge Matthew Schelp, a Trump appointee, appeared persuaded by the states argument that the mandate would lead to staffing shortages.
The scale falls clearly in favor of healthcare facilities operating with some unvaccinated employees, staff, trainees, students, volunteers and contractors, rather than the swift, irremediable impact of requiring healthcare facilities to choose between two undesirable choices providing substandard care or providing no healthcare at all, Schelp wrote in a 32-page order."

Health care workers should be the ones that need to be vaccinated the most.

The same people crying about how we need healthcare workers too much to worry about standards flip shit when the military lowers fitness standards to build numbers.

Maybe we should drop education requirements too. We could use more doctors, so maybe anyone with two hands that graduated high school should get hired.

I think saying "being afraid of a needle" is pretty disingenuous. Needles aren't the concern for some people

The people having a tantrum should read what the tc highlighted.

It's not because the judge is an anti-vaxxer, it's because of fear of mass exodus of healthcare workers. It's a tough spot to be in. Personally, I think that if you refuse to get vaccinated then you shouldn't work in healthcare. However, I also feel that all the unvaccinated leaving at once would create some problems of staff shortages and quality of care.

I feel like you should accept the disingenuous label over the truthful one.

It's way less insulting.

Oh well? Do a job properly or don't do it at all. If we have a firefighter shortage, should they start hiring people afraid of fire or climbing ladders?

They should also mandate masks in healthcare settings for the rest of eternity.

Hypothetically if an understaffed team of firefighters could put out ~60% of fires they were called to and a less understaffed team with all the same people plus some underqualified people put out ~80% of the fires they were called to, I think 20% of callers would be very glad for the extra help.

Funny that the people who want to scream at others for being "anti-science" are so averse to basic risk assessment and problems of tradeoffs.

Hypothetically you're in favor of making people with acrophobia climb 3-story ladders.

Considering how I doubt adding 6 random assholes to a fire squad would improve efficiency at all, let alone by such a huge amount, your hypothetical is completely fucking pointless.

No, in this metaphor, I'm in favor of letting the people who don't climb ladders continue to serve other roles, and you want to fire them.
Someone who can't climb ladders but can drive the truck is, in fact, fully qualified for the job.

No one supporting the end of these mandates is advocating that all the anti-vax nurses be moved to non-patient facing roles. They just don't think vaccines and masks and a general caring for health should be a requirement in healthcare.

Wouldn't doing that actually betray their own argument? That having nurses is more important than having nurses that don't spread disease?

That firefighter analogy is kind of dumb. It's more like you either have no firefighters or you have some firefighters who are possibly using flamethrowers instead of extinguishers.

Or rather that we have some firefighters, but having some extra that spray flames would be better than having less that only spray water and foam.

Just like how we'd solve a bus driver shortage by hiring drivers that refuse to take passengers, or doing something else that actually makes them shitty and useless at the job.

Right. And nurses who don't get vaccinated, while they are making a dumb choice for themselves and presenting some risk to others, might also reduce the risks overall for someone who needs to care they're fully qualified to provide and would otherwise not get in a staffing shortage.
So you'd be okay with some firefighting staff that might actually increase the spread of fires?

Its already happening. Hospitals are hiring midlevels and promoting their independent practice to save money. So be aware that if you expect to see a physician, you will probably see a clown with an online degree and no training, unsupervised.
