I tried Civilization but I want something a little more hands on. I don't like the whole "You attack this square" type games. I tried Sins of the Solar empire but I want something thats more than a RTS game as well.

You could go for Humankind/Endless Legend/Endless space. Those are turn-based but get far more detailed in battles, designs, and the like. Total war is also good if you're find with real-time battles. Otherwise you need to be a bit more specific about what you're looking for. Like, something more focused on economy and city growth/management? Combat depth? Something else?

That's a good choice. But he asked for 4x TBS's which I wouldn't classify X-com as. Good TBS, yes. 4X? No.

Edit: Though you'll probably enjoy this: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BqoEJUWKVRFSKXOA2Ks3Ce7Kvphmg0kAFKcuXJHgmr0/edit

Not sure what 4X is but Knights of the Realm 1 and 2 are kind of management games with RTS combat. I've never played 3, but it's generally agreed upon that it's the worst in the series.

Basically you start off small and your goal is to find new resources, expand to said resources, exploit them for advantages, then use them to push to win the game. This USUALLY takes the form of building cities and armies and controlling entire nations but can happen on various other scales as well. Civilization is the poster child of the franchise but there's plenty of other options.

Then Knights of the Realm 1 and 2 will definitely be up your alley.(although one might be a little too dated, 2 is still good though)

OG master of Orion, is one of my favorite games by far. Back when there was only civ 1, there was also this.

theres two core tenets of game design that I just love so much. One, self-discovery and borderline exploitative use of various OP combos. But its like dota 2, where its so pervasive, it balances itself out.

Second tenet, is the rogue like features of randomness in regards to the tech tree, which is basically a unicorn in this genre. You arent guaranteed to have access to the same OP combos/strategies every game, and makes you actually work strategy to adapt.

another plus, the UI despite being ancient, is pretty easy to work with.
