yeah I don't think people realize how bad restaurant service would get if servers didn't get tips

most of the good servers I've been friends with made $20+/hr easily. one girl I knew would make 200-300 on one Friday night sometimes

Yeah I just posted the same thing about service. Servers try to give good service because tips depend on it. Tell someone they are gonna make the same hourly no matter what and they lose all incentive to deliver a good experience.

I really dont understand the logic behind this.

When I worked at TopGolf I saw a girl get a $1000 tip. People would make $300+ any weekend night.

Let the servers have their money. This all comes off as bitter IMO.

so is it fine to not pay the delivery fee and only give a tip? like if theres a $10 delivery fee and a $10 tip, just pay the tip and not the delivery fee

I don't use door dash, but I would assume the flat fee of using the service is non negotiable.

Id really like to hear the explanation of how people think companies could eliminate tips and keep prices in the same stratosphere. A server usually makes like $2 an hour base pay. To even make the job attractive theyd have to pay servers minimum $20 an hour.

Many people were ok with raised prices. Not everybody, of course. And you dont have to make the job attractive. Minimum wage will get you workers, still

Yes you do have to make the job attractive. Were literally seeing it right now with restaurants being shut down and reducing hours due to lack of staff.

All workers arent equal. Im sure that doesnt fit the servers have no skill narrative but Ill tell you its wrong.

I dont get why we would want a society where people have to take unattractive jobs. If you know its bad for the workers then why push it? To save a few dollars on the tip? I dont get it.

Not really. You said servers make $14 USD which isnt feasible at all. Every server I know would quit at that pay. Its shit pay.

Probably. But a bunch of high schoolers looking for jobs would probably take them

Why? What does this accomplish? Youre not gonna save money if every menu item goes up a few bucks. I dont get how thats a better solution.

It makes it so servers and others dont have to rely on tips to survive

You actually dont, though. Many high schoolers would jump at the chance to have a job. Its hard enough for many to find a job. So, hiring one would probably be easy. I mean, most of them already work minimum wage jobs. This would just be another one for them to work Thats something people see everyday. Some people just need a job to live, even if its not attractive

Servers have no problem relying on tips because the people that tip well make up for the people that dont. This is my whole dilemma is if youre gonna push this dont say its because its what servers want because they dont.

So we displace a bunch of adults that are serving to take care of their families so high schoolers can have a job? High schoolers that will probably do poorly compared to the previous severs? A high schooler cant tel you what drinks are and arent good.

It just makes no sense to me. Ive seen people ages 20-60 serving and without tips it wouldnt be realistic for any of them. Just let them be.

Dont mean to keep dragging this on but its one thing Ive done before and really feel people need to understand. Servers do not want tips eliminated.

Servers have no problem relying on tips as long as they are getting a good amount of them. So, females are usually ok with it. Anyone that doesnt get the best tips probably wont like it as much, or who work slower nights And I never said its what servers want. But they really shouldnt have to rely on something that a no guaranteed. Especially when they have to guilt us into giving them money to get their bills paid. Because thats exactly what tips are. Tips consist of money guilted out of the customers who are already paying for the food

Dont mean to keep dragging this on but its one thing Ive done before and really feel people need to understand. Servers do not want tips eliminated.

When did I say to displace them? I said high schoolers would take the jobs. But thats if the jobs were available. Nobody is telling the other servers to quit. All that was said was that somebody knew many servers who would quit if instead of surviving on tips, they had to survive on a normal wage. But they arent forced to quit. They can still work there. But if they quit, high schoolers would be there to take the job And high schoolers already do serving jobs at many places. So, its not like its a new thing. And not every server of age can tell you what drinks are good. Not everybody drinks. And many who do sometimes only know about the few drinks they like. And that might not match your taste. The bartender would be better for that They actually have a knack for it

The reason its not realistic without tips is because they arent making a decent wage. Getting rid of tips, and paying them like a normal job would give them a better chance. And its way more stable

I know they dont. But many people in the US do. And they dont have to eliminate tips. I just want to make tipping optional. Like it technically is now. But youre looked at like youre a bad person if you dont pay someone else rent or bills by tipping. And only in the US, it seems I just want it to not be mandatory. Though, some place have eliminated tipping. I think it was a restaurant in California. And they still have servers, because they pay them enough

These door dash programs are not designed to provide halfway decent work for people. Its specifically a money grab by the owners/CEOs/shareholders. It actually hurts businesses and they overcharge the shit out of people. Delivery charges dont go to the driver. How can the CEOs justify this? They basically kick their feet back and take in profit and it costs so much money that people assume the tip is included.

The obvious answer to this is to get off your ass and go get your own order.

This article is poorly written (reads more like a blog post), but its spells out how predatory these companies are:

https://www.chicagonow.com/coming-to-terms/2015/11/how-door-dash-works-and-why-you-should-avoid-using-it/

If theyre up charging that much and still dont pay the workers fairly (to where tips are essentially the majority of their income), thats just proof that most of the money is going to people who dont earn it (CEOs).

In my experience, I've had generally good luck with Door Dash. But a couple instances over the past few years ring a bell:

  1. If there are multiple bags, I've had someone just deliver me "Bag # 1 of 2"
  2. Since you can track where they are on the app, I've seen a DD driver literally 2 minutes from my house and for some reason go a different way and drop off multiple other orders and arrive at me 10 minutes later
Those times annoyed me and I'd directly blame the driver. But since you have to pre-tip up front there's not much to do. I've never called Customer Service or anything like that. I just live with it.

DoorDash sends the directions. Thats not on the driver. If youre closer they will still reroute to another location if they ordered first.

No one can say that. Maybe customers will pay the same tip if servers are good. Maybe even tip more if theyre good since they arent being a good server just to get enough money to live on We have no idea how well theyll be tipped Either way, not a paycut

I wish you were on minimum wage. It's all you're worth.

Drivers are automatically worth more than minimum wage considering gas, vehicle wear, and the general hazards of a driving job. No one will ever take a delivery job at minimum wage, so enjoy picking up your own orders!

yet they'll take the job for less than min wage hoping customers will play along and let themselves be extorted.

good fuck people not tipping well but the services should pay a living wage
More like fuck the companies.

It's not the customers job, duty, or obligation to tip. This attitude is why companies get away with passing the responsibility off to the customers.

America's ridiculous tipping culture is the problem.

Not really. You said servers make $14 USD which isnt feasible at all. Every server I know would quit at that pay. Its shit pay.

Servers in New Zealand arent accustomed to making $30 an hour. Give them that kind of pay and see how they respond when you tell them youre cutting it in half and taxing more.
In what world is 14 dollars an hour shit pay?

Why? What does this accomplish? Youre not gonna save money if every menu item goes up a few bucks. I dont get how thats a better solution.

This only seems to be an issue for people who dont like to tip. As someone who tips well I dont want all prices to go up just because of non tippers. If you dont want to tip you dont have to.

Once again there is nothing good about lacking an option. Besides that see how fast service decline when your waiter doesnt have to do anything more than bare minimum to get paid.
You still have the option to tip in my scenario. The difference is restaurants actually have to pay their employees and people who don't want to tip aren't guilted into doing so.

People would probably tip more if DD didn't slap 11 bucks worth of fees on every order

Probably true.

I could order a 10 dollar small cheese pizza from a place, then hit a 7 dollar service charge, 5 dollar drivers charge, 6 dollar 'something else' charge and next thing you know, you are paying 28 dollars for a 10 dollar pizza, and still needing to tip.

I believe in tipping well, but when these shitty ass services tack on all these charges, it really disuades anyone from wanting to tip. Not that it is right to avoid tipping, but this is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of..... if not..... the biggest reason tips are shit for delivery drivers of these services.

You can get hired at McDonalds for $15. $14 an hour is nothing. No disrespect to anyone making $14 an hour but dude come on. Thats not a livable wage in 2021.

I wouldn't mind seeing these services go if it meant my time in the restaurant would stop being effected and increased. I went to a place that served chicken a few weeks ago, and for 30 minutes, all the orders coming out of the back were for doordash/grubhub. People sitting in the restaurant were visibly getting irritated as orders were never coming out to the tables of people in the restaurant.
