The hype train for this one is kinda ridiculous. They're announcing trailer releases days in advance. I get that it's probably going to be a solid movie and will be kicking off some new MCU storylines, plus it's plucking all the right nostalgia strings, but with all the hype around it you'd think it was the next Endgame.

I kind of feel like the last trailer did a better job of selling me on wanting to see the movie. It presented the same basic concept (and did a better job of it, honestly). The new trailer doesn't really add anything new or overly worthwhile, it just throws in little moments or quirky humor bits. And sort of assumes that you already saw the last trailer and have an idea of what's going on - if this is the first trailer for the movie you've seen, it might actually be a bit confusing.

Between Doctor Strange 2 being about the multiverse, and Loki setting things up for alternate timelines and worlds, and lots of people seeing "multiverses" as being the way they're going to bring the Fantastic Four and X-Men into the universe, this sort of feels like they're using it as the launching point for everything that comes after. So this is IMPORTANT in a way that Shang-Chi and Eternals weren't.

Especially since Loki likely had a tiny fraction of the audience because they used it to sell Disney+ instead of trying to get it wider exposure. So tons of people aren't going to have any of that context once the movies start playing around with the idea. But making Spider-Man the key to setting up the multiverse means way more people will see it (especially in the wake of Into the Spider-Verse being a popular movie).

Basically, if Endgame was the "ending" of the old MCU, this is more or less the "beginning" of the new MCU. So it makes sense they're hyping it hard. Especially after the last few movies have under-performed (either due to the pandemic or because of audience burnout).

99% of these movies are boring as fuck. i cant believe the MCU is still as successful as it is. and then i look at the Netflix top 10 and go ohhhh yeah, Im not surprised people like this schlocky dogshit

chang chi? it just introduced the character, and the eternals i have no idea because i don't care about them
the only mcu movie since 2018 was black widow, eternals, and shang chi. the d+ shows were basically the filler then. wandavision is the catalyst for scarlet witch to get involved into the metaverse, loki was the catalyst of the entire multiverse thing, and falcon was just to establish him as the new captain america

Afterthoughts and throwaways, mostly.

Eternals was supposed to serve the same purpose they originally wanted to use the Inhumans for - to basically have mutants in the MCU when they couldn't have mutants because they were tied to the rights Fox had control over. But now that Disney has those rights back, it became superfluous.

Shang-Chi was basically an attempt to cash in on the Chinese market, which made it doubly ironic that the Chinese refused to show it.

Black Widow was basically a movie that came too late and was more to shut people up who were complaining that she never got a movie of her own because of sexism. And to potentially set up a replacement Widow for future MCU stuff.

Most of the Phase 4 stuff after this point is going to be much more interconnected, though. Spider-Man and Doctor Strange both involve the multiverse, the new Ant-Man is based around Quantum Realm shenanigans (implying time-related stuff) and is going to involve Kang (who is all about time travel and alternate realities, and who they're trying to build up to be the next Thanos-level megathreat overall). And Fantastic Four will probably tie into that as well.

It looks great but I'm kind of sad that the MCU will not get their own takes on classic villains like Doc Ock or GG. It's looking more and more like Holland will never really get a film where he feels like a self sufficient Super Hero, and is instead stuck in the role of baby Avenger.

I also hope this film doesn't hinge too much on nostalgia for old films (especially when only 2/5 are actually well regarded). The last thing the film industry needs is more of that.

Agreed. I felt the same way about the hologram versions of Molten Man, Hydro Man, and Sandman.

It's hard not to be caught up in the hype a little (I was a teenager when Raimi's Spider-Man first came out), but with Spider-Verse already being popular and Spider-Verse 2 coming next year, this one does feel pretty redundant
