Last week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the parent company should be given one last chance to show it is not boycotting Israel by making new investments in the region.

"If they make that kind of commitment, I'd be very receptive," de Blasio said during a daily news briefing. "If they refuse, then divestment becomes a much more necessary option."

if you refuse to sell a product in illegally occupied territories once owned by Palestinians and now owned by Israel, it's essentially boycotting the government of Israel.

I didn't say anything was wrong with what Ben and Jerry is doing. Just that it is boycotting Israel one way or another. If anything I am totally against illegal occupation from the government of Israel.

Iirc they have a board of directors made up of 11ish board members that decide on B&J's messaging and branding and only 2 of them are from Unilever. I think that was a part of the deal when they were bought. It's pretty unusual for a company to do something like that but politics and branding (and dank ice cream) is what makes Ben & Jerry's great.

That makes a lot more sense. I thought Unilver put incredibly smart people on the board or something. I guess technically they kinda did.

I don't know if the Supreme Court has ever heard a case about these laws or not, but either way, it is blatantly unconstitutional--and dare I say unpatriotic--to deny American citizens and companies the right to boycott foreign governments. It's a blatant violation of the 1st Amendment. Any politician who writes or votes for laws like this should be stripped of their position. It's abhorrent that an American politician would support a foreign government so strongly as to give the 1st Amendment the middle finger.

No form of criticism should be forbidden. I don't at all agree with racist, isolationist, or xenophobic policies, but if politicians make laws denying citizens basic rights like freedom of speech on behalf of a foreign government, what else are they doing for them that we don't know about? It's disturbing to think about.

Why does the US have such a hard on for Israel? This has baffled me for so long. Is it because the Israelis have influence in the higher levels of the US Government? That's the only reason I can think of.

I don't remember the exacts of it anymore, but a lot of the evangelical support is out of some scripture about the Jewish return to the promised land being a pre-requisite for the end times. So they think Israel succeeding puts us one step closer to rapture.
