Literally EVERY weekend there's massive amounts of traffic buildup from people trying to go to a market right around the corner from my home, making the simple act of just going to the gas station less than .5 miles from my home take 10-15 minutes.

It's like this everywhere.

WTF

Makes sense.

But holy fuck is it annoying how there's always a million cars on the road at any given time

I've been here for 5 years but the constant traffic and need to drive everywhere is wearing thin on me. I now work an office job, and a location that's only 7.6 miles away takes me 40-50 minutes to get to. Makes no damn sense.

One of the biggest factors for why I'm trying to leave.

Old design for a city they didn't expect to be a mega city.

Hell Phoenix has a few million people but even back in the 50s they designed outlying areas with a grid system and multi lane roads. Not hard to get around Phoenix.

Dallas and Houston grew too fast with little planning.

Happens at least once a day where some asshole in a pickup truck speeds ahead to beat everyone to the merge.

Last week someone drove on the shoulder to do it. The drivers here suck ass.

I mean technically it has been tested that a zipper merge is better for traffic than merging early. Though speeding up and driving on the shoulder are not.

Well yeah, that's the proper way to do it, but the thing is that Texans don't know how to drive.

I can attest to that. The majority of these clowns get their license out of a cereal box. They don't yield for oncoming traffic too. I was headed to work the other day and this lady in a BMW was suppose to yield and I had the right of way. Gets pissed at me and throws up the finger a few times and break checks me. I just shake my head and roll along. Just another day in Arlington.

because there's shit for public transport. Partially because of the oil and gas lobby (HQ'd in houston) knows there's more consumption demand without public transport and actively fight against it, and partially because houston is SO large and spread out that it's a massive undertaking and now a cyclical problem.

The amount of people I've seen straight up run stop signs in busy parking lots is absurd.

And these problems are exacerbated by shitty road design. Like in order to get home, I have to do a U-turn on the feeder road. The lane is literally designed for this, and yet it's designed in such a way that you damn near have to turn your head 180 degrees just to see if any cars are coming. God Forbid anybody decides to start speeding through.

Extremely minimal effort into public transportation. When public transportation gets the shaft, it's not a viable option and people will always opt for driving their own car. Make public transportation a real option, people start using that and traffic will start to let up.

Bingo. This is a common problem in the US. Pouring ungodly amounts of concrete without actually making life better for people.

There's a joke about this in comics that perfectly explains it to non Americans like me.

Kaine, the Scarlet Spider (Spider-Man's 2nd clone to take the name because comics), is webswinging around his newly adopted home Houston when he suddenly plummets to his death and manages to snag a webline just in time. He wasn't used to the fact that Houston doesn't grow upwards as NYC does.
