I find it strange that 30+ year old men would willingly watch cartoons for little girls, but I don't hate anime.

I'd say "hate" is a strong word, but I kind of classify weebs into the same sort of category I put stoners, shippers, furries, etc.

Namely, it's perfectly fine to like things. But when you go past like into obsession, and then past obsession into "annoying other people with it", then it's a problem.

If you're just someone who likes anime, that's perfectly fine. If you won't shut the fuck up about how anime is the purest form of media ever invented and how much you love Japan, slipping Japanese words into conversations, buying Pocky because it's something Japanese people do, etc, then you're kind of an annoying dipshit.

The problem is, the Internet in general has a way of turning any fandom or interest into its most extreme form, as fans gather together and effectively form echo chambers where their behavior just gets more and more intense because you have a skewed impression of what is acceptable and what's a bit over the top.

I don't care if they're teenagers watching some dumb show, I just think people who obsess over it and think it's a major part of Japans culture rather than just thier version of cartoons are annoying, like that guy who was here a week or two ago claiming Japan did no wrong in WW2.

I wouldn't say hate. I don't like anime for a couple reasons. One, it doesn't interest me that much. Two, the fanboys are hugely obnoxious and live and breathe anime. Especially any otakus or Japanophiles. Three and the big reason is the pervertic nature of a number of them. I don't mind a little raunchy stuff, but not to the level of what anime does. Kind of disgusting at times when you got adults obsessing about it.

Nothing wrong with anime. A lot of them are pretty good.

As for weebs... The best way I can describe it is that they are a completely ignorant group of people who espouse knowledge and understanding that they don't have. They act out in disgusting manners in worship of a culture they don't understand yet think they do because they watch anime/read manga/whatever. They tend to act like self-entitled heroes despite their only 'weapon' being their fanboyism. Many of them opt to do things like lust over anime women while also not doing a single thing to clean up their lives and fix themselves.

It's the difference between a fan of Star Trek going to a convention dressed up as Spock before returning to the real world where they're an insurance agent and someone who obsesses over every episode and can not only recite their scripts by heart, but can tell you the cup-sizes of all the female cast members, and claims to love space SOOOO much, but at the same time couldn't tell you what the 'Whirlpool Galaxy' is to save his life.

I dont like harem and slapstick anime. I am more into dark subject matter when it comes to media.

Alright, some pretty informative answers in here, didn't know weebs were that annoying about it, I've never met one irl but met plenty of people online with anime profile pic and japanese sounding account name and they always seem like the nicest people which is why I made this topic.
(The real assholes always seem to have a pepe / twitch emote profile pic, I wonder why that is)

Here's the issue. A lot of people watch anime, read manga, and play japanese games. Surprisingly people who watch shows typically about forming close bonds, manga about being heroes, and games where teamwork is needed tend to be very good at working together and not being a jerk. However some people read these things and take away the wrong message. When that gets combined with the sort of obnoxious and self-focused person that thinks they know everything... you get a weeb.

And yes they're a problem. A lot of them do shit like play D&D but with a character that's clearly Naruto/Sasuke, perv on the female characters/players, and then get furious when the girls reject them and consider them creeps and their OC gets slapped down hard. Or, worse, they get their way and they do creepy shit to the girls and become something like a half-demon half-kitsune wielder of the black sword of fate and master of the six different forms of the donkey or something. It's just as bad as edgelording but... anime instead of emo. To make it worse people look at them and think that all anime and anime lovers are like that. So if you tell them you're a fan of, say, One Piece they immediately think you're about to try to shadowclone yourself to try and kaoiken your zanpakuto when all you're really doing is crossing your fingers funny while you take a stance than looks like you're trying to do a standing poop.

There HAS been a female version of this popping up of late though with things like Steven Universe and Owl House and stuff instead of anime.

As for the pepe/twitch thing... I dunno.

Otaku has a very different meaning inside of Japan (basically what we consider 'weebs' here), but outside of Japan (especially in America) it tends to refer more to a specific sub-set of geek. It... kind of has to as 'weeb' refers specifically to the people who act terribly meaning there's no real term for the people who, say, really like anime, manga, and japanese-style games but, at the same time, don't act like... well... weebs.
