This is simply untrue. Go ahead and change jobs - it is currently an employee friendly market. I changed jobs and got a 19% increase in pay to

I also know a lady who quit being a teacher assistant at school and became a manager at a fast food restaurant. She went from making $18 / hour to 60k a year.

The job market is crazy right now - people are bouncing all over. If someone wants to keep you, they will. It is near impossible to find help right now.

Even if your random anecdotes are true, they have nothing to do with inflation or wage stagnation.

Why doesn't minimum wage go up with inflation? That shit never made sense to me

You should be able to afford the same shit off minimum wage now that people were able to afford back in late 60s/70s (peak minimum wage when adjusted for inflation)

Because people with money don't want it to, and they pay for the campaigns of the politicians that have the power to enforce such regulations.

More than going up with inflation, though, minimum age should reflect local costs of living. Mandating a flat minimum wage across the whole country (or even a whole state) is inevitably going to result in employees getting more than they need in some areas while still being insufficient in others. Instead, the minimum wage for any given business should be dictated by an algorithm that takes local rent (and other costs) into account. Something like "working 40 hours a week should pay 2.5x as much as 1/3 of the median monthly rent for a 3-bedroom apartment within a half-hour walk of the business," or increasing that range to a half-hour drive and including the median cost of car ownership. That way, it remains a livable wage, while effectively controlling local rents because of pressures from businesses that can't afford to pay for higher rents.

That's how it used to work, until corporations paid the government to stop it. Then they spread false info that raising the minimum wage causes inflation, which is why you have people nowadays that say shit like: "15 dollar minimum wage is ridiculous! We can't raise the minimum wage that high!"

You don't have to be a genius to see that the floor on many jobs has risen greatly. For example, two years ago it was about $10 an hour to start in fast food and everyone clamored for a $15/hour minimum wage. Today, every Wendy's, McDonalds, and Burger King in a 30 mile radius is advertising $15-20 an hour to start.

I've heard lots of anecdotes regarding these chains offering high wages in their ads and then low balling during actual offers. Or simply not responding to applicants at all.

Retail and fast food take so much brain power, but not calculation, but patience. It's tough.
It's why someone who doesn't care can work the job for a while but then they leave.
It's why so many of us workers are miserable, not because of life choices, but because of consumer choices. People are becoming more and more reliant on the thinking of others, especially opinions.
To have to be working, while thinking for people who treat like you an object, all while having to act like you enjoy it, is some mental gymnastics.

Pay increase is the start of making it bearable.

How is that a personal anecdote? Here are three or four of the first google searches that come up:

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/23/fast-food-wages-climbed-10percent-in-latest-quarter-the-largest-jump-in-years-report-says.html

https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-factories-fast-food-wages-pay-employment-staff-worker-2021-6

https://wgntv.com/news/mcdonalds-offering-up-to-20-an-hour-pressuring-competition/
These are all only related to the fast food industry lol. And I'd like to see which McDonalds are offering 20 an hour and for what positions because I know none of the ones near me are paying their low level workers even close to that. I saw a sign on the Starbucks drive thru window yesterday that said, "now hiring excellent pay starting at 12 bucks an hour." Lmao maybe if you say it's excellent pay then someone believes it. 12 bucks an hour will barely pay for your gas to get to work and back at the rate gas has been skyrocketing

But I will say a lot of industries are desperate for workers right now and I know my company can't afford for me to leave so I'll be asking for a significant increase at my year end review. And if they don't give it to me I'm moving to another company. With the current rate of inflation, a five or 10 grand raise is probably breaking even

The best part of this article is that "up to $20" only applies to managers and when a company says pay will range from $15-$20 it actually just means $15.
