Under a negative light has a underlying racist tone? This is especially rampant on platforms like twitch. Hell whenever a Japanese person like Yoshida in the recent FFXIV interviews came on screen, a lot of users were just posting "Weeb" and anime emotes constantly. Its freaking cringe and kind of demeaning.

Maybe I'm overblowing this but I see it on twitter as well. Sometimes Kpop stans do this to anything towards Japanese too.

Now that Korean movies and music are becoming more popular and mainstream in the west I'm seeing a lot of same kind of sentiment directed towards them too. I feel like a certain "type" of westerner feel threatened when foreign media gets recognized, especially if they're not white.

That's the point. Japanese/Asian is an ethnicity/race. When you equate any media that's associated with Japan/Asia with a derogatory term that's racist. Maybe this'll put it better. Ghetto isn't a race. But if you call any media created by a black person ghetto, call Obama ghetto, call people interested in black history ghetto, call people who are attracted to black people ghetto, that's racist.

It's not automatically a racist term but it's often used as one.

Some of you guys are reaching with this. This isnt the first time a word on the internet was used incorrectly, most of the time it is used in jest with no ill intention. Some examples are words like cuck (which is now to demean a man's masculinity) and simp (to make fun of anyone who spends money on e-girls related). Ive seen that word used on twitch streams and i usually see the streamer just laughing and joking about it. If they were against it they would probably moderate it or instruct their moderators to time out/ban users who say it.

This is how I feel. Even people i know in real life actively avoid eastern media. I remember one of my friends loving Demon Souls and Dark souls. I told him it was made by Japanese developers. He was like, "wow it's not weeb shit" or some thing along those lines. It's really casual how people regard anything Japanese or asian as "weeb shit" sometimes.

The majority of Japanese under the age of 30 identify as otaku. I don't know what a weeb is exactly, but hikikomori are not the same thing. Otaku also isn't just anime or whatever. Like most young women identify as otaku, but they're likely idol or seiyu otaku. Similarly you have train otaku, airsoft otaku, etc. Otaku basically means a person who is really into their hobbies these days. The negative connotation is basically gone.
