I'm pretty sure my first DVD was American Pie. Rented it and played it on the Xbox.I was one of those weirdo's who didn't have a PS2 for a DVD player.

The TV fell off the cabinet because my Dad had to move the TV to plug the wires in and he didn't place the TV back properly lol

I remember earlier ones had those thin cardboards cases and were double sided. Ugh. Think my first one was Rush Hour. Still have that original copy.

My first dvd was Enemy of the State. A fun little fiction starring Will Smith about crazy conspiracies that totally didnt turn out to be true.

My second one was The Stand television series. It was the first thing I ordered from Amazon if I recall correctly.

I dont remember what my first DVD was. But I remember being amazed at how you didn't have to rewind or fast forward and could just skip to different scenes. And how you could have extra features like commentary.

I don't think we ever really owned DVDs. My mom bought my dad a DVD player for his birthday and it wasn't until he unwrapped it that she realized she hadn't bought any DVDs. Luckily Blockbuster existed.

What I do remember was the first time we did rent a DVD. It seemed to be the wrong copy because all it had was the special features. My dad took it back and the first words out of his mouth when he came home were, "I hate technology." It was a double-sided DVD and we'd put the wrong side in the player.

I remember being blown away by porn DVDs cuz of the higher bitrate quality over the usual 56k Realplayer quality lulz

To think that deleted scenes, alternate endings, and commentary tracks were packed in features to our favorite movies, and now they've faded further and further into oblivion as we go into streaming :(

I remember walking into my local video rental store. And having the DVD section near the front. Eventually it switched to mixing VHS and DVD copies together. Then the VHS faded out from there on.

Sad, that local video store closed down this year for good. Wish I supported it more.

Yeah, for some reason my high school put our graduation footage on vhs, even though dvds had been a pretty popular thing for at least 2 years by that point. Ill have to go through the process of transferring it, I suppose.

They made such a big mistake putting those useless "security stickers" on DVDs (and CDs)

They would usually leave behind residue, which really cheapened the case and the item in general.

I think Resevoir Dogs was the first DVD I owned. Didn't actually watch it until some time later.

I don't think DVD really boomed until 2003 or 2004, when companies realized that the format's new menu and chapter-skip functions were ideal for putting classic TV shows on home video. Family Guy was one of the earliest and biggest successes in this regard, and it was also one of the first tv series I bought on DVD.

I'm still kind of amazed by the relative longevity of DVD. If I'm looking to own a tv series, I'll definitely seek it out on DVD over Bluray so that it'll play on both old and new devices. And considering that the entertainment industry has emphatically moved to 'rent' instead of 'own,' I'm crossing my fingers that these DVDs will last me the rest of my life.

I worked at Blockbuster back when DVDs started to become the norm over VHS. At first, we only had like 2 shelves dedicated to DVDs. When we made the switch, we had a long night of removing VHS tapes and making DVDs the primary rental items in their place.

Im not kidding when I say that starting the next day (and for several weeks), we had many clients who were old men & women come up and complain about the changes, saying that we didnt know what people wanted and that this would put us out of business. (Funny, considering it was the lack of keeping pace with changing technologies that was a big reason of that company eventually crumbling.)

The funimation one piece dvds are pretty nice also. Usually has some nice commentary tracks or random stuff like anime cons, interviews and whatnot in them. The last set that released a few months ago is finally starting to combine them with blu ray copies. (Thankfully the price didn't increase).

I've been buying these one piece dvds all this time, its too late to turn back now, lol.
