I'm fine with either version of the Prelude; I mean, I prefer FFVI's, but it's not by a lot, so I could do FFX's.

Great, so Prelude (FFX) joins Cosmo Canyon (SSBU) in the contest!

This means there will be no 'best loser' spot in the tiebreaks. The winners of groups 1-10, as well as the two highest scorers in group 11, will proceed to the contest proper.

This is a good idea, but we already have things going on long as it is!

I'm amazed at the number of votes we've gotten for day 1 of the tiebreak alone. If 12 tracks in one day can get these numbers, then I am now leaning heavily towards having 4 matches per day in round 1 (instead of 2, which was my original plan).

Also: lefty has suggested I drop the 'Best' from the contest title, and making this the 'Final Fantasy Music Contest (FFMC)' instead. Thoughts on this? Which do you all prefer?

Tiebreaker Day 1 Results

Group 1
Limit Break! (FFXIII-2)- 12
The Legendary Beast (FFVIII)- 18
Endwalker Theme (FFXIV- Endwalker)- 10

Group 2
Mi'ihen Highroad (FFX)- 2
A Moment of Camaraderie (Crisis Core: FFVII)- 12
Bombing Mission (FFVIIR)- 26

Group 3
Wrath of the Harrier (FFXIV: Shadowbringers)- 9
Cyan's Theme (FFVI)- 10
Servants of the Mountain (FFX)- 23

Group 4
Ultima (FFXIV)- 20
A New World (FFV)- 11
Yeul's Theme (FFXIII-2)- 9

The bolded titles are the winners and will progress to the main contest! Sadly it is farewell to the other eight. I was really surprised at how many votes we got, thanks everyone! And though none of the matches were that close, the votes were still spread around pretty much every track.

Day 2 is now up! Who will join this winning group of 4?

nice, everything i voted for won. with how much support XIV was getting in general i assumed Ultima would get in easily. completely overlooked it as something i might need to support myself, so i'm relieved that made it in particular. i think i would vote for that over anything i actually nominated that went to this tiebreaker phase. it'd be a tough choice against Legendary Beast or Decisive Battle, at least, and definitely would pick it over the others (or Lava Dome, which is probably something i would have supported if Dear Friends didn't get a last minute support).

Damn, not sure that it would have changed the overall outcome given the gap with Legendary Beast but it definitely seems like Endwalker lost some votes due to not having a clean version. Oh well :\

Bad timing for Endwalker, for sure. XIV has a bunch of representation at least! Maybe I should've pushed this contest back a few weeks, I also kinda fear that FFV Pixel's imminent release might contain a godly mix of Big Bridge that we can't use >_>

Phew, I've finally finished preliminary seeding. Next step is to pop everything into a bracket! I'm using bracketmaker and I think I'll make two 64 brackets on there, I don't like how the big 128 bracket looks with everything on the left, bleh.

For the record, the seeding is based entirely on nominations. Here's the priorities I used, in order:
  1. # of total nominations (more noms = higher seed, obviously)
  2. # of unique users nominating (fewer doubles = higher seed)
  3. # of trades used for that track (fewer trades = higher seed)
  4. The time a track first reached its final nomination count (earlier = higher seed)
If there was still a tie between tracks after that, I went back to the previous nomination to see which track got there first, as many times as needed. After all this, there was exactly one tie where two songs were nominated 4 times, in exactly the same posts each time. I couldn't think of a breaker for that so I had a randomiser pick!

This has resulted in some wild seedings, some tracks are definitely way over/underseeded in terms of how popular they are lol. I might move things around a little to setup some fun matchups (not enough to change a track's seed number), but I probs won't interfere with it much. Enjoy the ridiculousness that is to come!

Tiebreaker Day 2 results

Group 5
Don't Be Afraid (FFVIII)- 11
Battle 3 (FF Mystic Quest)- 16
Movement in Green (FFX)- 12

Group 6
Bros on the Road (FFXV)- 7
Final Fantasy (FFXII Version) (FFXII)- 11
Insanity (FFXIV: Shadowbringers)- 19

Group 7
Battle 2 (FFIV Pixel Remaster)- 14
The Black Wolf Stalks Again (FFXIV: Shadowbringers)- 6
Valse di Fantastica (FFXV)- 18

Group 8
Aerith's Theme - Home Again (FFVIIR)- 16
Streets of Rabanastre (FFXII)- 14
Prismelody: Those Who Fight (World of FF)- 8

Wow, this was an exciting day. Battle 3 raced off ahead of the others in group 7 at first, with Movement in Green left in the dust. But somehow Don't be Afraid and Movement clawed their way back to a 11-13-12 split at one point, before Battle 3 woke up again and secured its path to victory. Groups 3 and 4 were also close, Streets of Rabanastre just missing out. Aerith now has 3 themes in the contest, that's more than XII itself!

One out of four, but Aerith's Theme pulled it off as my favorite music of that day. Streets of Rabanastre was my second favorite, unfortunately....

I was going to hope for Battle 2 FFIV Pixel Remaster vs. Good King Moggle Mog XII in the contest! The former is out, unfortunately, but hey, I was pleasantly surprised when the latter qualified!

Ughh, why did I forget about FF theme. Also, I'm not really a fan of new Aeris Theme. It needs a strong orchestral backing to deliver the emotional impact it deserves, not a lullaby treatment. In fact, most of the remaster/remake music I've listened to is worse than the original. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is very relevant here, and they make too many changes that steer the track away from what made it great originally

Tiebreaker Day 3 Results

Group 9
Rebel Army (FFII Pixel Remaster)- 13
Battle on the Big Bridge [FFXII Version] (FFXII)- 4
The Decisive Battle (FFV)- 18

Group 10
Force Your Way (FFRK Version) (FF Record Keeper)- 18
Goblin's Lair (FF Crystal Chronicles)- 9
Revenge of the Horde (FFXIV: Heavensward)- 9

Group 11
Lava Dome (FF Mystic Quest)- 8
Westward Tide (FFXIV- Stormblood)- 3
Battle with the Four Fiends (FFIV Pixel Remaster)- 5
Chaos Shrine (FFRK Version) (FF Record Keeper)- 19

Not so close today, Rebel Army staged an impressive comeback but nothing really threatened the 3 frontrunners all day. Lava Dome takes the last slot of the 128, and now we're done with the preliminaries!

Congratulations to our tiebreaker winners!

Aerith's Theme - Home Again (FFVIIR)
Battle 3 (FF Mystic Quest)
Bombing Mission (FFVIIR)
Chaos Shrine (FFRK Version) (FF Record Keeper)
Force Your Way (FFRK Version) (FF Record Keeper)

Lava Dome (FF Mystic Quest)
Servants of the Mountain (FFX)
The Decisive Battle (FFV)
The Legendary Beast (FFVIII)
Ultima (FFXIV)
Valse di Fantastica (FFXV)

They will all be 15 or 16 seeds in the contest proper, but with how wacky the entrants are who knows what could happen!

Hmmm... so if we haddone the final play-in of best 2nds vs 2nd in the final group, it wouldve been Battle 2 (FFIV Pixel Remaster) and Streets of Rabanastre (FFXII) for getting 14 each, vs. Lava Dome. Easy Rabanastre vote for me there...

Unless it was percentage-based, 13/35 > 14/38 so Rebel Army (FFII Pixel Remaster) vs. Lava Dome? That'd have been trickier.

Of course people might have strategically saved differently if we ended going down that route.

Wondering if tiebreaker winners gonna be randomly assigned to the 15 or 16 spot or if it'll be based on tiebreaker round votes they received... though the latter would disadvantage Lava Dome so I'm assuming former? Guess we'll see!

I have tweaked the bracket a little to try and keep games spread around, and also to create some potentially interesting matchups... But nothing has moved far from its 'actual' seeding, the furthest is swapping a 12 seed and an 11 seed for example. And to put it in perspective, the number of tracks on 4 noms from 4 unique users spans from 5 seed to 12 seed, so really it's miniscule differences.

That said, the seeding will likely look bizarre. It's entirely off of nominations, so some 'big' names are low down! Don't sleep on the low seeds!
