I'm a Lyft driver. Went back to Lyft driving a couple months ago, because GrubHub and UberEATS have not been so busy.

She wasn't wearing a mask when she got in my car. I asked if she had a mask. She said no. I asked if she could get one. She calls her friend and it is apparent that I am picking her up at her friend's apartment and not her own house. Her friend doesn't have a mask for her. This girl offers to pull up her sweatshirt over her face for the entire ride and I I form her that doesn't qualify as a CDC approved mask as is the requirement for all Lyft passengers and drivers.

Then she asks me why I can't just be a good Samaritan and drive her anyways. I again tell her those are the rules and there is no exception. She gets really mad and calls me racist and says I must hate black people.

Like WTF

I get TONS of people of all types who get into my car without a mask. I ask them if they have a mask and most of them do, but won't put it on unless I out a little pressure. Some people don't have one on them, but have on inside their home and I tell them that Im happy to wait for them to go grab one.

I enforce this rule on absolutely everyone as I am required to do.

Honestly, Lyft driving is pretty great outside of dealing with people like this. The vast majority of people wear a mask no problem.

This is the first time I've ever been called racist for enforcing a rule that the app informs every single passenger of multiple times whenever they order a ride.

Nah just like pull up the front of it. The way she did it was exposing her nose too. It was a really lazy way to even make a makeshift mask.

I also remind a lot of different people to please have their mask cover their nose as well.

Like I've given around 200 Lyft rides since I went back to driving Lyft. I've only had to kick out five people from my car for not having a mask. I just tell them "sorry, but I can't give you a ride if you don't have a mask."

They never sound happy about it, but they usually just leave the car.

I thought about bringing spare masks in my car to provide for people, but honestly it just isn't my responsibility. I do get paid a portion of the would be fair for kicking people out. So financially I am incentivized to just enforce the rules.

I have no obligation to do so. The app tells passengers many times a mask is required. There is zero excuse for ordering a ride and not having a mask.

Financially, Lyft will still pay drivers a portion of the fare if a passenger doesn't have a mask. I am properly incentivized to ask these passengers to leave my car.

You're making your life harder just to be petty lol. It's hard to feel any sympathy for you when you'll willingly walk right onto this situation again just to be petty and not offer a 20-30 cent mask or however much those bulk cheap ones cost. Sure, you're not obligated to make your own life easier, but when the only reason not to is to spite others....

This doesn't really make my life harder. I just had one person be exceptionally rude.

Again, it is not my responsibility to provide anyone with a mask. Lyft does not provide me with masks for free.

It would actually cost me money and take more effort to have masks in my car.

Quite frankly, someone who is so blatantly going to try to break a rule that Lyft reminds every single passenger of a few times Everytime they order a ride just isn't a very respectful passenger.

I'd rather ask them to leave the car. Often enough, I'll get paid a better amount for kicking them amount considering how much more time and gas it'd take to complete the ride.

I am following every single Lyft policy by the way

I know they should wear a mask... but it doesn't cost much to have spare masks. In a world where people are confused about the rules of masks, I'd say you're the equivalent of someone who leaves a shopping cart out in the open because you're too lazy to put it back to the cart area.

Again, people are extremely confused about mask policies; they're getting a variety of information related to vaccines and masks and two, a lot of places that "enforce it" don't enforce it in practice. You're well within your right to enforce the rules, and I was with you in this story... until you said you're going out of you way to be petty about it.

Have you ordered a Lyft ride before? I had to order a few for the first time earlier this week when I was getting new brakes put on my car.

There is absolutely no room for confusion here. Lyft will tell every passenger a few times each time they order a ride that masks are required.

It is not at all reasonable to assume you are fine to not wear a mask in a Lyft. This rule has never changed.

How does it serve me to provide something to the passengers for free?

I still get paid a pretty reasonable amount of money for kicking them out of my car and these potentially bigger problem passengers can't give me a bad rating.

If Lyft provided me with masks for free and require I have extra for passengers just in case then I would do it.

Instead, they offer me a financial incentive to not give rides to there passengers and if these passengers get marked like this often enough then their account will be banned from Lyft.

Again, why should I provide them with a mask? What benefit does that provide me or to Lyft?

A lot of people ITT seem to have this sort of attitude.

I get a lot of tips from Lyft drivers/reddit

One of the biggest tips is to not provide passengers with masks, water, candy, mints snacks or anything. The vast majority of drivers say this results in passengers leaving garbage behind and/or not leaving enough of a tip to cover the costs.

I keep my cat clean
I drive them as safely and as gently as I can. I gas soft and brake soft and don't give anyone a headache with my driving.

This is the most drama I've ever had from refusing a ride to a mask less rider. She called me racist for it and it was a laughably stupid assertion for her to make.

You also act like there is no risk to driving someone who has the audacity to get into a car mask less when Lyft gives them multiple warnings about the rules. Like what other covid precautions is this person not following?

I'm still putting myself at risk by having strangers in my car. I'd rather not drive someone who can't even be bothered to follow a simple rule.

Very few businesses would allow you to come inside naked. Many businesses are not enforcing mask mandates at all, even in the most strict of states as there's not a way to ensure it's being followed.

Very few people get assaulted for wearing clothes. There are many stories of people getting assaulted for wearing masks.

In my county alone, there was a pause on the mask mandates, and then it was reinstated, and then it might have been paused again, yet no one knows because there has been many arguments about it internally.

Family pressures, peer-pressures, misinformation by the news; believe it or not, not everyone lives in your internet bubble you have created for yourself. I, myself, am not confused; I will bring a mask since I will not assume otherwise. Many people do not get appropriate forms of communication/information directed to them, and are indeed confused due to the nature of how the mask mandates were handled. If TC provided them a mask, and they went to a store or another public place for instance, perhaps they would actually have gone in with the mask. Now, they'll probably find another driver as I doubt every driver is enforcing the policy, and go to that place without a mask. Our battle is not to ignore those who aren't getting vaccinated or wearing masks; it's to educate those who are confused about the situation. Obviously, many are still confused otherwise this would not have happened.

Lyft and many transportation services have not ever changed their rules. The CDCs guidance on mask usage has not at all changed requiring those in any sort of public transportation.

There really isn't any room for confusion here. The Lyft app will notify each passenger multiple times when they order a ride that a mask is required.

Why should I give them any more leeway when I am financially incentivized to do otherwise? Do you think Lyft wants people who would so willfully attempt to break these rules using their platform?

One person calling me racist for a completely illogical reason does not negate the other benefits.

Can you explain what benefit there is to providing these people with masks? I don't really see it.
You wouldn't be so annoyed as to feel the need to make a topic about it? Can you explain how buying spare masks is some huge inconvenience for you?

I am not paid for those masks. Lyft pays better for rejecting riders who don't have masks than giving them a ride.

I'm a little annoyed by it, but mostly amused.

Why would someone who calls someone racist for refusing a ride to a mask less rider at all be put into question here?

If Lyft drivers carry around spare masks for customers who don't have a mask of their own... the customers never learn the right lesson. Instead, they learn that their careless disregard for plainly stated rules carries no consequences.

Meanwhile, if you kick them out of your car for neglecting the rules, they learn that they'll get their asses kicked out of the car if they don't bring a mask of their own.

Don't coddle people. If you clean up after them at every turn, they never learn to pick up after themselves.

But you have to wear a mask when you drive, right? So you're already buying them. You don't really have to purchase a bunch more since I doubt this is such a common occurrence.

Wtf @ people telling OP to buy spare face masks.

If they want a ride, they need to follow the shit they agreed to when they ordered it. Tf lmao. No mask, no ride.

I have reusable/washable face masks that I bought for myself. They're nice and comfortable because I have to wear them all day long. There is zero way I'd ever share one of those with a passenger. I would never ever want a mask back that someone else wore.

It's not his responsibility to cover for inconsiderate customers. They can make their own bed, and they can sleep in it. These are adults we're talking about, remember?

Didn't say it was his responsibility. But there's also a very easy fix. It wouldn't be that serious to me but TC can do him, I guess.
