Now you even get hit with sales tax when buying shit from overseas.

amazon.ca has always charged the Canadian GST AFAIK.

I guess I should also look at states without income taxes, and... huh, Alaska is on both? Yep, Alaska is surprisingly expensive to live in, mostly the cost of things like say milk or other food is much higher.
