The Earth already does so many natural things we need to survive, because we came from it. Climate, water, plants, sun cycles, proper gravity, atmosphere, ozone, etc. Minerals, oils, ecosystem, all that stuff.

If we colonize somewhere else, we're just going to end up with the same problems somewhere else. Except it's going to be drastically more difficult since we're going to have to artificially create all the things this planet already does naturally on top of everything else.

We should just use the technology we plan on using in space on Earth instead.

Just moving isn't going to fix the problems. It's like if your current home getting full of trash, but your plans are to build a new home from scratch with a built in trash remover robot. If you're smart enough to make a house from scratch with a trash removing robot, why not just fix up the house you already have? Or just throw out the trash yourself.

Colonizing space just seems like an astronomical waste of money

By trying to colonize other places, we will be forced to deal with certain difficulties immediately instead of pushing it off for decades or centuries. The innovations that would result from it could then be put to work towards making earth a better place.

The only reason billionaires give a fuck about space travel is so they can eventually secure the money and tech to be capable of asteroid mining, so they can become trillionaires.

It was never about innovation. It was never about progress, and it sure as hell isn't about making a difference.

Doesnt matter. Like the space race was just a dick waving contest between the USA and USSR but it lead to useful shit.
Trying to mine asteroids and whatnot is a much better reason and is a lot harder to do.

I dont care if like Musks motivation turns out to be something absolutely stupid like taking the first dick pic on Mars if the processes and innovations required for that are useful.

Also an artificial environment would probably be much easier to manage since we'd control all the variables

Idk when being anti scientific/human progress got so popular though

Did space become evil just because bezos is interested?

You dont think humanity getting access to huge deposits of valuable metals isnt innovation/progress?

It would make a huge difference ffs

If it made them trillionaires that would just prove how valuable their accomplishment is to humanity

Elon Musk has said he wants to colonize space to put the polluting earth industries there and exploit any resources there.

Eerily similar to the so-called Age of Exploration - send our undesirables out and bring back any plunder we find.

Not so sure it will turn out much better this time.

On the basis that it is extremely unlikely to involve displacing/destroying/enslaving any already existing peoples, it should turn out better

The idea is supposed to be that we just control all the variables, so people can just fuck up however they want and it'll be dealt with. Also, having to deal with less or no variables at all from natural disaters to droughts

If people could they'd probably do the same thing to the Earth.

It's not anti progress. It's that progress should be happening here. There's some sort of weird priority/dream of colonizing space when the issues that happen here, and eventually there, aren't being looked at as intensively right now.

Either that or you must really hate rich people. I mean, if they were the ones to leave for Mars colony zone xx-01 or whatever, they can at least leave most of their fortunes behind for those who stay to solve the problems they made at least.

The nearest planet that wouldnt be worse than Earth will be in like 200 years assuming the worst projections for global warming is a bit too far for anyone to reach in a human lifespan. The space mining and even the tax evasion motivations are far more reasonable.

Yeah I agree. I'm not trying to say that nothing good can come out of how things are progressing now. I'm saying that I wish it was more obvious that doing good for the Earth now is more important, and especially, more realistic than literally terraforming other planets to be like the Earth that we already have.

We could just devote that energy and all those resources directly to solving our problems. The innovations weren't made because they were related to space, they were made because they were invested in and considered important. Just like scientists managed to produce a life/society saving vaccine in a year, because it was important to do so and was invested in.

Instead of hoping that the whims of billionaires will eventually benefit mankind....how about we directly try to benefit mankind?
