Why put all of our eggs in one basket? What if Earth gets meteored at any time?

If Earth can get meteored at any time, so can any other celestial body. Instead of using the time it takes to go to Mars and build an asteroid defense there, what if the resources from going to Mars went into making an asteroid defense+ system here?

They wouldn't be making an asteroid defense system on mars. What they'd be doing is spreading humanity over a larger area. It is like if everyone lives on one small island, a tsunami or a bad hurricane or whatnot could make us go extinct. If we instead live on like every reasonable surface on the planet, it would take a planetary scale disaster to make us go extinct. By spreading ourselves into space and doing it well, we could survive that sort of disaster.

1) the rich allow the poor to die off on Earth and due to the reliance on Earth for supplies, people in space would become slaves
2) people on Earth are left to die as the rich go into space with all the money and precious resources like platinum, accelerating the demise of those of us who won't serve the remaining rich

Unless they deliberately kill everyone will like murder bots or nukes, neither of those would happen. And in scenario 2, they wouldn't take a bunch of platinum and whatnot with them when they'd have space mining getting plenty of that shit without having to fight earth's gravity.
