Loved it. Probably the best big-budget blockbuster I've seen in years.

One thing I particularly enjoyed (without even consciously realizing it until my gf pointed it out) is the almost complete lack of humor. After a decade of Marvel and new Star Wars dominating the blockbuster landscape, I've been forced to stomach way too much of that in every major movie. Not EVERYTHING needs to follow that tired ass formula, and thankfully Dune didn't.

Hey now, youve got Duncan clowning on Pauls girlish physique.

Seriously though, humour would be really weird and out of place in Dune.

really liked this. For an older franchise it felt really fresh

was worried it wouldn't hold my attention. I fell asleep during Blade Runner 2049, it was too dry and plodding for my taste. Dune was pretty rad.

Hope it makes a lot of money and we get a sequel

Planning on watching it tomorrow, as a gigafan of the books I'm really wary of the film based on the trailers. So many shots of explosions and battles, but the book very rarely focuses on such things. The biggest battles universally take place off-page and are tersely described by one of the characters before moving on with the plot.

I liked it but I'm so shocked that they only did half the book. I somehow did not realize that going in.

It's not that I dislike the pacing, I think it matches the tone of the book very well. But I think to really *get* what Dune is doing you at least need to read Messiah, and with zero indication we're going to get that it's a pretty bold move.

I've just got zero clue what people who are unfamiliar with the series are gonna take from this

I am very very confused as to why they downplayed the traitor subplot to the point of pretty much cutting it.

That's the entire intrigue of the first third of the book and no one even mentions the idea that there might be a traitor.

The movie pretty much lines up with the book breaks in the book itself. That said, the DUNE Miniseries continues to be the best adaptation. I was frankly a bit disappointed in it, and I would be really hard pressed to know how someone without prior knowledge of the series would take it because they don't really explain too much at all or do so at such a quick pace that it's hard to get much from it.

A trilogy would be pretty much ideal, so hopefully the movie does well enough to get two sequels confirmed. It seems to be on a good pace. It would just suck if we only got one sequel and left the third up in the air.

I mean they also didn't explain why everyone was wearing energy shields and yet were still just fighting with weapons that went through them anyways. The lore is cool and all but I think people overstimate how much you need to know to follow the plot of the first book, which you can very easily just take as the fantasy/sci-fi mashup that it is.

Now, if they DO get to do a trilogy, all this stuff gets way more relevant (especially Mentats). But for a movie that also means it's best explained later, not now.

Yeah that's what I mean. I'd have been fine with one Dune movie and maybe a sequel, but seeing that the plan is to structure the movies around covering Messiah it feels like a way bigger waste of potential if it doesn't. There's already a lot of foreshadowing for Messiah in this first movie.

A lot of the best people in the Atreides arsenal are take ins. Duncan Idaho was basically an orphan to my recollection that was trained as a Swordmaster of Ginaz. If I remember correctly, he isn't from Calladan like the other Atreides are.

Just watched this. Enjoyed it quite a bit, though it really left me wanting more.

I read the first 3 books in the series maybe 6-7 years ago. And then I re-read the first 3 and also book 4, about 2 years ago.

The thing about my time reading the Dune books was that it wasn't what I expected it to be. I thought it was going to be about sand worms and battles and space fights, and, well, it's much more introspective and philosophical.

I remember being sort of dissatisfied after finishing the first book. In my mind, Messiah was a very necessary extended epilogue. Based on people's reactions to this movie being "only" half a book, I'm interested to see what the reaction to the end of the next movie will be.

And then the thing is, yes, you could stop reading after Messiah, but the reality is that Children finishes Paul's arc. So, it's basically required reading. I just don't think we're going to get there with this movie series though.

God Emperor though....man that was something else. When I did my 2nd read through of the series, I had planned on reading all 6 of the OG books. But by the time I finished God Emperor my momentum had run out.

The last 2 books are the first 2/3 of an unfinished trilogy, so its not that bad to just stop at God Emperor.

And yes, Messiah isnt a terrible place to stop the films. but Children of Dune is the obvious natural end point, so Im somewhat surprised that Villenevue hasnt even floated the idea of filming that.

I'm somewhat unfamiliar (I've seen the David Lynch film but never read a word of the books) and felt this new iteration did a great job introducing and explaining the world. There was never so much exposition that I felt I was being lectured, but enough that I never felt lost with the plot, characters, or world culture.

This is in stark contrast to the Lynch version, where I remember being pretty damn confused (and yeah, I'm sure that's largely because he only had 2-3 hours to communicate the first book's story, while this new one has the luxury of 2-3 hours to show us just a chunk of it).

It seems like... quite a lot of significant aspects of culture is missing? From this thread, it doesn't seem like they mention the Butlerian Jihad or OCB at all and those are pretty integral

Yeah, I probably should have said that I'm very unfamiliar, not just "somewhat." Aside from Paul, the only thing I really remembered about the Lynch version is that the Harkonnens - especially the Baron - were gross.

So there really wasn't anything in this new movie that felt missing to me - I never gave one thought about the lack of computers, for example, and I doubt many other casual viewers would question something like that or ponder an answer for it.
