Interestingly enough, the team that would be the greatest competition to the Lions isn't the Browns or the Jaguars but the franchise that everyone always forgets - the Cardinals. Ultimately, I think the Lions probably beat the Cards because at least the Cards have been to a Super Bowl (and an all-time classic, at that), but the Cardinals have probably the worst level of sustained failure across the entire NFL, even worse than the Lions. It's easy to forget, though, because the Cardinals have had a few competent seasons recently.

Yeah, the Cardinals would probably be 2nd place even counting that Super Bowl since they didn't win it. They've been an irrelevant franchise for most of their existence.

The Bucs would be in this conversation too if it wasn't for those two Super Bowl seasons.

Jags have as many playoff wins as the Lions despite a 65 year difference in their existence. Same with the Cardinals but a 75 year difference.

Jags, Lions, and Cardinals all have 7 playoff wins.

Jags began in 1995 (7-7)
Lions began in 1930 (7-13)
Cardinals began in 1920 (7-9)

Yeah, it's really hard to be in the same discussion as the Lions. They don't make the playoffs very often, they don't win their division very often, and they don't win playoff games basically ever. The Cardinals are the only team that are even close - and in fact, they were actually WORSE than the Lions before 2008 - but 2008-2009 and 2014-2015 safely lift them above the Lions. (They're still #31 though in my opinion, unless you think the Super Bowl is disqualifying - even the Browns (#30) have had more sustained success than the Cardinals throughout their history)

Jags fan here. You're WAY off.

Jags won more playoff games in '96 alone than the Lions have since the Ford family purchased the team in 1963.

Also did you forget the Jags were robbed of a Super Bowl appearance just a few years ago? The 2017 Jags/Pats AFC Championship Game was rigged the same way Saints/Rams 2018 NFC Champ Game was. The only thing keeping the Patriots alive was an absurd 10-to-1 penalty ratio that favored Thomas Brady (the most marketable player in the league) and vaulted him into the $uper Bowl.

In such instances where its not perfectly clear, refs arent supposed to blow the play dead, theyre supposed to let the action play out. Regardless of how tough a call you think it was they made the wrong call. Pretty lame of you to mock people for being annoyed their team got jobbed. Youd probably be crying twice as hard if it happened to your team.

But anyway yes its a shame that team didnt have better QB play

It was definitely the wrong call but I don't think it was egregious. Even if it was, it happened with almost a full quarter left and a two possession lead, and they got the turnover. The Jags had countless opportunities to win that game and blew it, they have no one else to blame. And no, I wouldn't cry about the officiating unless it was more blatant and later in the game, like the Saints DPI no-call (and even then they got the ball in overtime and threw a pick)

Also, I probably wouldn't have responded at all if he didn't go for the "it was rigged!" angle. The Patriots haters are much worse and I do have some sympathy for Jags fans. He seems like he might be both though!

I get that Pats fans have to defend their good buddies the refs (especially after they tried to come through for them against Dallas this week) but to say you can't blame the refs for blowing a call that would've completely changed the flow of the game is silly regardless of whether the Jags still could've won it or not

Funny story the refs literally blew a play dead for no reason at all that took away a Patriots TD in 2015 (it was the regular season and they still won, so who cares) But anyway what I mean by not blaming the refs is that 1. it was an extremely close call and no one is pefect and 2. even if you disagree with 1, you can't blame the refs for the loss because that wasn't the reason they lost.

P.S. I'm not actually a Patriots fan, I just used to root for all the Boston teams because everyone hated them and I thought it was funny. I do like Brady though. I'm actually a Cardinals fan and while I did blame the Super Bowl loss on missed holding calls on Harrison's INT return for awhile, I have since learned the errors of my ways!

anyway sorry for derailing the topic and being a jerk please continue bashing the Lions and Cardinals

The Lions have had the terrible luck of their division harboring Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers for most of the last like, 30 years. Their best ever player retired early. And beyond that, their ownership has been abysmal.

It's always fun to read other people's fun facts about dismal teams and know it doesn't hold a candle to the ineptitude of the Detroit Football Lions. Last playoff win was, what, January of '92? Haven't hosted a playoff game since around 93 or so. Didn't win a game at Green Bay from 92 until 2015. Even when we flirt with being a good team, the NFL is quick to put us back in our place (2014 Lions @ Cowboys Wild Card game. Phantom face mask on Rodgers in 2015 leading to the "Miracle in Motown" pass that gave GB the division. Jim Schwartz challenging a clear fumble, only for no challenge to occur because if you challenge an automatically challenged play, no challenge will happen. Golden Tate catching a game-winning TD at the goal line against Atlanta with :06 to go, somehow being called short and down by contact, and then losing the remaining time on the clock due to a 10-second runoff.)

The Lions are not only the worst franchise, they're often gaslit about it when people in the media act like the Cleveland Browns are the historic losers of the NFL. The Lions are just a punching bag for the NFL never to be taken seriously.
