It's not the equivalent of lying to a child, it is literally lying to a child. The real question is whether or not it's a harmless lie, or if on some level they're internalizing the idea that they can't trust others because even the people closest to them lie to them. With the slow realization and disillusionment over time contributing to why "cynical asshole" seems to be becoming the default personality type of the modern age. Though arguably, it might even be a good thing, because it's like inoculating your kid against lies by teaching them to be more critical of what they're told, no matter the source.
