I don't know anything about guns. But have they like improved? Like, do they shoot 10x harder than 50 years ago or something? i'm not getting the feeling that a guy with a gun today would fare any better against a monster or alien vs a guy with a gun 50 years ago

They have in terms of reliability, capacity, modularity and such.

Mass manufacturing has gotten a lot better.

But compared to the difference in the 50-100 years before that not so much. But the entire world being at war twice (and small arms playing a bigger part on the battlefield) will do that

Yes. They have improved in many ways.

Example: in the last 50 years, an enormous number of guns utilize polymer components to reduce weight. It used to be steel and wood for any gun. Weight reduction made gun manufacturers innovate ways to reduce recoil, since back then you designed a gun with heavy components to help absorb recoil shock.

There have also been improvements in rifling inside barrels, safety functionality, optics, etc.

Ammunition has also been fine tuned and there are a lot more options depending on your purpose.

In big ways

Scopes have probably seen the biggest advancements. Red dot scopes for example have become really reliable with battery lives that can last for years without being turned off. They're much easier to aim than a traditional iron sight.
