Kisara hype. The animation of her butt while she walks is SO DELIBERATE. They wanted the Ryza market.

Cleaning up side quests and doing some accessory crafting before I beat the game.

Only level 54 and there are a few bosses that are a bit too annoying without having to spend all my items to beat.

Kisara was super fun to play as in the demo but it took her awhile to be usable in the actual game haha. Probably cause it took me forever to unlock her aerial moves.

But her and Dohalim were who I mained for the most part.

I'm pretty floored by how fun every single character is to play in this game. There's legit not a bad or even mediocre one among them, though Alphen does end up being the most desirable against bosses since the Blazing Sword can just chunk health bars.

These English VAs nail the emotional scenes, I gotta say.

Also, Kisara is fun to play but damn i need some aerial artes.

Finally unlocked the second set of artes so i have 6 artes for quick access in battle. Control scheme is a little wonky but I'll get used to it.

Ya i have:

Square - normal attack
Triangle - arte 1
R1 - arte 2
R2 - arte 3
Circle - evade/guard

Which was working okay for me, but with Kisara and her mechanic to activate artes while guarding, it kind of makes more sense to have R2 as block. But when I changed the controls my muscle memory kept screwing me up so I'm sitting tight with Circle for block.

Which was fine until they introduced holding L2 for the second set of artes, and now it feels like I'm pretzeling my hands all sorts of ways when i hold L2 and also Circle to use an arte.

Btw, is it enough to just be holding Block when I use an arte, or does Kisara actually need to be in a guard stance to get the bonus? I can't tell if there's any kind of visual cue of my using her perk properly.

R1 felt reasonably natural for normals to me, surprisingly. You kinda have to have it on a trigger or shoulder button if you want to play Rinwell without twisting your fingers up, at the very least.

R1 as regular attack would've ended up hurting my finger. I went with:

X - normal
Square/Triangle/Circle - artes
R1 - Jump
R2 - dodge

Holding the button is enough for Kisara's strengthened artes - it goes into effect before any visible animation. If you're talking about her Guard Ignition buff from blocking attacks, you can see it like any other buff but it also makes her shield glow. (You lose this buff if you stop attacking for an instant, and that includes touching the guard button for strengthened artes, so stick to the regular versions when you're on the offensive with her.)

The game is designed for R1 as normal attack once all the systems are unlocked. It can initially feel better to move it when you've got limited options in battle, but it's going to be a mess once you have to start using your second Artes set for example.

it's maybe moreso the clickiness of the PS5 R1 that's bothersome. It doesn't "feel" like a button that should be pressed rapidly. it works as a combat button if the hits are slower/have more weight behind them (like a God of War) but not for Tales imo

The difference in quality between the fully animated cutscenes and the static skit cutscenes is immense

Feels like there's a big difficulty spike at the start of the 5th realm. I'm struggling to even beat like 3 sets of enemies in a row without running out of CP and having to run back to a camp.

Finally got Kisara's first aerial arte.

Also played Law and Dohalim for the first time thanks to the Novice trials. Law seems like a ton of fun to play as.

Not sure on Dohalim.

I did finally finish this. I had absolutely zero desire to do the post-game stuff, but I did beat all the optional bosses available before the final boss. It just reiterated the problems I had with the battle system/party AI, but also it was the most fun part of the game, so I don't quite know what that means.

Glad I played it, but overall just okay

The stretch from Lenegis until the final dungeon is absolutely brutal. The pacing just completely crashes into a wall and they spend literal hours on exposition dumps with almost no gameplay while somehow simultaneously not ever saying anything interesting.

Pacing is a Tales issue in general.

I watch all the skits, so that amplifies it a bit, but Tales has never had a good gameplay to story to cutscene ratio-include the skits and other RPG mechanics that slow things down.

Been busy at work and distracted by my new Switch. Need to get back to this game.

Kisara is fun but I'm starting to get bored since I only have one aerial art with her so far lol. Want to switch to using Rinwell but her magic thing is still a little beyond me.

Is Shionne fun to play? I've been leaving her to the CPU because I can't be arsed to heal my stupid AI team members.

Shionne is fun and absolutely busted against flying enemies. I get that this was kind of the point, but she's actually a bit too OP, in that I was taking down flying enemies 20 levels ahead of me thanks to her burst arte being ridiculous. Putting Dohalim on the party helps in terms of healing the braindead team members as well.

Shionne is personally my least favorite playable character but she's still really great. She's a pretty unique take on a ranged character for the series and can utterly carpet bomb the enemy while giving them no room at all for retaliation. Only bummer is if you're controlling her you basically have to ignore her spells so you can get the most out of her gun and bombs due to the arte placement limit.

So I've been playing with Alphen for the entirety of the game up until you get to the Quarry in Menancia. I decided to try out different characters... and come to find out that they all haven't learned any aerial attacks until I manually controlled them.

All except Law. He hasn't learned any yet. But Shionne and Rinwell instantly learned aerial moves. Wish I knew sooner.

Ive been hearing about this story dump section of the game. Im guessing Im still a longs way til that point?

Since Ive reached the ship, there were two instances where I had to talk to all my teammates, so Im guessing its more of that.

Having played both now, I feel safe in saying Scarlet Nexus is better in most respects, while admittedly being a much simpler/less ambitious game. They're both mixed successes in their own ways.

I know there's really no reason for me to associate them together besides the Bandai/Namco label, but I can't help myself.
