Chris Chan is one of the most well documented insanity cases I can think of. There's a 50+ hour series on YouTube about him.

I'm not saying that to defend them. They need to be institutionalized for life. Prison just isn't the right institution.

Exactly, if anything a successful insanity defense would land Chris in an appropriate facility. It's in pretty much everyone's best interest. Given Chris Chan's mental state, in particular a notable shaky grasp of consent, it's long been suspected that some sort of sex crime was likely.
