From context, the answer is pretty obviously "tongue".
To agree with everyone else, Wiktionary says it can mean either "tongue" or "under" depending on the kanji used. Sahuagin posted... why there's more than one word "shita" I don't know Because there are only so many sounds human mouths can make for language, but kanji-based languages can have thousands (if not tens of thousands) of different letters (or letter combinations). So there's overlap where multiple symbols share similar or identical phonemes, and you either need to see the symbol or use context to understand the meaning. Mao has something like 6 different meanings in Chinese (that I know of) depending on slight differences in emphasis that you'll probably have trouble noticing unless you're a fluent speaker. And that's even BEFORE you start to bring accent marks into the equation. What makes it worse is that words that overlap that way rarely have similar or related meanings. For fun, see how many different symbols can be pronounced this way: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/m%C3%A0o#Mandarin --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ...
