Either you recap everything in a big confusing exposition dump that wastes time in the current game, or you just leave everyone who didn't buy every final mix and keep up with the mobile game and read all the Nomura interviews to drown. tbh, I wish they had just gone the latter route. If you skipped everything between 2 and 3, you've already kinda resigned yourself to not understanding the story by that point, and everyone who has been keeping up doesn't want a recap of stuff they already know every 5 minutes. Like the dude in post #52. It's entirely on them for not understanding KH3's story if he skipped over a decade's worth of story. They re-released all the games multiple times and shoved it down everyone's throats that KH3 is a sequel to all the handhelds and not KH2. They gave people all the time in the world to catch up (either by playing, or just YouTubing stuff). Like, the way they tell the story, spread through so many consoles and games (and gachas) is really fucking dumb, but I feel like it's even dumber to water in down for the players who actually stuck through it all. People should know that they shouldn't skip to the final season of a show and expect to know what's going on. So just have fun with the gameplay itself at that point. For a hybrid/collaboration concept they were better off keeping a simple protagonist/antagonist dynamic. IMO, CoM singlehandedly ruined the trajectory of the series. Unfortunately minds were made up well before since the Deep Dive feature existed in KH1 + Remix. But there have been opportunities to fix all this in KH3. Plots and subplots were seemingly getting wrapped up but they had to throw in the most stale and unintelligible plot points and script. Both of which are plot-important, as you may imagine, and set up the next story arc. It's hard now to remember a time when the Final Fantasy series was on top of the gaming world, but in the early 2000's, the series was hugely loved; even casual gamers considered FF 7 the GOAT game. And FF X was a recent-enough hit that many gamers were just as excited about the FF character mashup as they were the Disney mashup. I'm not above admitting that I teared up a little the first time ~~a very much alive Aeris~~ walked into frame. On the Disney side of things, young adults like me grew up on the movies - the Renaissance period of Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, etc were particularly formative on our childhoods - and seeing those movies / characters mashed up together was a damn cool concept. It should also be mentioned that this was way before things like Disney+, when Disney was still in the bad habit of creating artificial scarcity with their 'vault' bullshit; by the time KH 1 and 2 came out, I hadn't seen Beauty and the Beast since I was a kid because I literally couldn't purchase a VHS or DVD copy of the movie anywhere. So the source material being generally unavailable for regular viewing made seeing all these characters in a video game all the more alluring. Kingdom Hearts 1 was basically a cool mashup concept fueled by nostalgia overload, with a serviceable main character and plot to tie everything together. There were hints of the convolution to come when ~~the secret evil OC who'd been barely hinted at in vague cutscenes and text logs usurped Maleficent at the 11th hour to become the big bad of the game~~, but it was still far from losing sight of the core concept. The name Xehanort didn't yet exist at that moment in time, and we were all better off for it. Kingdom Hearts 2 was your standard bigger, badder sequel that fixed a ton of gameplay issues the first game had. One of the most significant improvements - at least in my eyes - was that, after roughly the halfway point of the game, you could return to the various worlds and have a second quest. One of the criticisms of the series overall is that visiting Disney worlds is too often just rehashing the plot of the movie with Sora and the gang clumsily inserted into the plot; the second quests were generally better tailored to the game itself. The downside is that the plot started to chug full-speed towards Convolution Central in KH2 - you'd be forgiven for wondering if you accidentally bought the wrong game for the hours-long intro sequence. And it was readily apparent that you were missing significant chunks of the story by not having played that GBA game, which most people (myself included) would not have considered essential. Still, while KH1's plot ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, KH2 somehow managed to wrap things up fairly well, with only a vague hint at the very end of adventures to come. Kokonoe won pretty hard all things considering, the only thing she didn't win was her revenge on the snake for everything that happened between him, the lotus, the great sage, the platinum alchemist and the sister. One thing's for certain tho, whenever the next blablue, the so called "possibilities" might throw everything out the window as we know them phenomena interventions, the black beast, the central fiction and the chronophantasmas, through it could also end up triggering another calamity and continuum shift.
