Less handholding and more unique quests instead of trying to rely on their new system for infinite quests, imo.

Everything.

More quests.
Better quest storylines.
Was a bigger leap in quality from Morrowind than Skyrim was from Oblivion.
Kept a lot of the lore and associated gameplay mechanics that made the game fun (like needing to use silver or magic on ghosts).

bait thread? Oblivion was way well more received than Skyrim. Morrowind has a very good reputation too.

Somehow I think it worked better at the end of the day, eh? Skyrim just sucks the life out of Oblivion, in terms of immersion. Oblivion already has some problems with flatness & repetition in that regard tho, yes. Skyrim wasnt nearly as magical or coherent. Honestly.

Ive played countless of hours in Skyrim and really enjoyed it overall.

I just started Oblivion for the first time ever about a month or two ago, and Im already loving it way more. Better writing in its quests and I just like its RPG mechanics a lot more than the watered down mainstream mechanics of Skyrim. The less hand holding and overall greater difficulty is a lot of fun too.

I found the combat less tolerable in Skyrim

like, if you never mastered Oblivion, it was fun... but if youd already done that, aside from the Dragonborn powers (which were what they were. And usually are). It was just the same stuff and this particular stuff isnt worth it. Neither was Morrowind nor Daggerfall

in this case Skyrim loses points BECAUSE it did the same thing as Oblvion but better lol

Did you use any QoL mods? How do those factor into which one you prefer more?

I guess it could be considered a wash since both Skyrim and Oblivion have pretty good mod communities.

I did use a couple to be honest one in particular that made it so any skill increase (minimum of at least one) would make its given attribute be able to be increased +5 instead of 10 skill increases.

Thats pretty much it though, the rest were just bug fixes and such. I just didnt want to keep track of all my skill increases and micro manage everything like crazy, because other than that aspect I really like Oblivions leveling system.

I think that both games aren't good. One is the king that I don't remember well what he was doing. But king are very problematic sometimes. For skyrim, it's a rebellion sir. The prisoner, which btw can be on the right side according to the player, after the escape, need to join a rebellion.

What we need was a generation of games that played like Oblivion and were bigger and focused on VR with motion control......... Where the characters actually aged and all that good stuff.

..... you know what. Im scrapping the above message just to say that 4 is LEAGUES ahead of the entire TES series.

Thats what I mean by a generation of games like Oblivion

Pretty much everything, save combat and the persuasion mechanics.

That said, Skyrim is the one I still play to this day, as it plays much better and the numerous mods Skyrim now has easily makes up a lot of the issues/differences.

My list for features in a future TES game would be:
  • spell freedom from Morrowind
  • questline detail from Oblivion
  • world detail from Skyrim
That would draw upon the strengths from each title.

  • Guilds were more fun
  • Quests were way more fun
  • Had a central city world which was cool
  • More enemy types
Don't get me wrong, it did an awful lot worse, but these were some definite things.

Oblivion at the time was such an original experience. When Skyrim arrived I knew what to expect from a "Bethesda game" and have already seen most of the tricks at that point.

By technical measure Skyrim is the better game but I prefer Oblivion's flavor of fantasy. Unicorns, knights and goblins. Skyrim is just viking porn.

Oblivion was the game that got me into both PC gaming and modding so I have a deeper emotional investment to it, even though I sunk hours into playing and modding Skyrim.

Is a summoner the way to go in Oblivion? Im still early in the game so still deciding on and messing around on what my play style will be, I just know I want to use more magic in this game since I rarely used it in Skyrim

It had much more interesting quests, both one off quests and entire questlines. I also enjoy micromanaging my stats so losing out on the core 8 stats was a downgrade for me.

Combat and some dungeon designs were the only real improvements in skyrim.
