As much as I don't want to shit on Chris Chibnall, he has been the absolute wrong choice to manage the series, and I feel bad for Jodie Whittaker that, as the Doctor under his leadership, she's likely going to bear a lot of the blame for series 11-13's shortcomings. But Russell T. Davies coming back is amazing, since the Eccleston/Tennant eras had some of the best episodes in the reboot! Woohoo!

Wow I didn't see this coming. RTD's era did have a lot of trash too, so hopefully he's matured out of some of his worse tropes. Here's to more Midnights!

Also this is amazing news! Although I felt the show was a bit too campy at times under Davies there's some undeniably great stuff there too so I'm excited!

I mean, all the eras have their good and bad stuff. But series 1 and 4 are two of my all-time favorites, and even 2 and 3 have some solid sections of episodes.

I might be persuaded to dive back into Doctor Who if this manages to salvage things. Sounds more like the gasps of a dying series desperate to relive the glory years to me though.

I like Davies, but Doctor Who is essentially about constantly evolving, so going back to an old showrunner just seems to be completely opposed to the entire show.

i would agree, but they kind of proved they can't find anyone good, so this is definitely a better choice than someone else at chibnall level of quality

I thought that Jodie/Thirteen was generally well liked, it's just the stories she's in that are pretty rubbish. I expect she'll be remembered like Eight- a good Doctor who didn't get a chance to live up to their potential (and hopefully fully redeemed by Big Finish in a few years).

That's kinda similar to how I felt about Matt Smith, or at least Smith vs Tennant. I liked Smith's version of the character better, but Tennant had overall much better stories.

That's how I feel about Capaldi. I think he is the best of the new series Doctor, but he had some of the worst stories and episodes. That said, even if the bad episodes he absolutely killed it with his performance. If he had stronger seasons I think he'd be universally regarded as the best.

I can agree with this. Some of his episodes are really amazing, like Heaven Sent

Aso saw this floating around.

Season 9 was great IMO. Probably a top 3 season for New Who.

Good call, especially if its only for the special and one series. I prefer the Moffat era as it was more consistent, but RTD was great at making event TV which is what the series needs right now.

Also, Smith was the most consistent Doctor in terms of episodes - not a single bad episode in his run, though some very mediocre ones. However, maybe Tennant and definitely Capaldi hit higher highs.

Smith's first season is the best Who season quality-wise IMO. It's like, the only consistently great season of Who there is.

Series 6 is the overall worst series the reboot has had (in fairness, I haven't rewatched series 11-12 to fairly judge them as good or bad), and series 7 is really bland in the "Clara is the most fascinating person the Doctor has ever met" half. Smith just never felt like a proper Doctor, but rather this goofball who occasionally tried to come across as a badass.

Smith is great and is mostly hampered by Amy Pond's only upside being that she brings Rory along.

Series 6 is great though. Its maybe the fifth best series?

9>5>4>10>6>3>8>1>7>2>12>11 maybe.

I have a hard time imagining any pre-Chibnall series lower than 2 though.
