Would you?

Would you get rid of a pet for an SO?

Personally, I wouldn't/couldn't. I'd dump them in a heartbeat... I would possibly change certain habits of theirs if I thought it was needed, but I'm keeping my little ones...

Luckily, I've never had to deal with it as my current BF is totally fine with them. And my last BF was good with them, too, surprisingly...

Nope. Well, I suppose it depends. There are some unlikely, extreme scenarios where I would. If they are someone that I've been with for years and truly love and this person suddenly develops a strong allergy to dogs, then yes. Because it is possible to develop allergies to something that you used to be fine with. I would have to choose her over the pet. My parents would take Lucy in and let her live the rest of her life still with family.

Somebody that I'm just dating? No. But they aren't really a significant other at that point.

We mentioned this in the other topic. My SO is actually allergic to cats. And I have one. So, we usually spend time together at his place. Some people mentioned also not getting another of that pet going forward. So, I wouldn't get rid of my cat, but not get anymore in the future. Some also said maybe splitting up or keeping things casual until later in life, as well. While some said they would get rid of the pet, most said no, and had other ways to deal with the allergy. Like not getting more later, or hanging out at their place...

Yeah. That's could happen... If I lived closer to home, I could possibly do that with my dogs and have them stay with my grandma. But tbh, I usually don't live with my SOs. So, I could just have them at my house or whatever...

Sure... But who's to say it's young? It could be like 14 already, and getting close to that age. Or maybe it has some kind of illness. Or maybe they aren't getting married soon. Or moving in together soon, or don't mind waiting... It depends on the couple, and what they have in store for the future. For example, Not only do I not plan on getting married, I'm not even sure I'd live with my SO. I love him, but I also like how we do things in our relationship...

Id get rid of my SO long before I would get rid of a pet. Our donkey is the only hoofed creature we have left. Also our 11 chickens give us love and eggs. The dogs are insane but good for a laugh. The cats, well, like being pet.

I'm kinda desperate for a SO to be honest. I'm not into guys but almost to the point that if a guy showed interest i'd try it out at least. Really lonely and miss having someone to take care of, snuggle with, plan things with and I want to go on trips (Especially to Europe) but don't want to go by myself.

Seems almost impossible to meet someone at my age, and i'm 40 minutes from town + don't like to drive. Tried going to meetups but so far they have all been meh.

Even with all that, I would NEVER give up a pet for any reason, a pet is a family member, like a child, and if someone wanted me to give up a pet to be with them, I wouldn't want to be with that person anyway. That would be like asking someone to send their kid to military school etc (which I know people do but is horrible in my opinion).

So no, I would not. I'd really like to have a SO though.

Yeah, I'm on Plenty of Fish right now, but only replies I have had are from people far away. Haven't checked since I got home today though and just signed up a few days ago. Alot seem to message me Hi, and then never respond back after I respond to them. My friend says that it helps them to have people respond to them or something so that is why they do it.

I tried before covid with a different dating site but the first girl told me she got raped by the last person she met online on the second date, and then on the third she asked me to marry her.

Next girl was great and we dated like 6-7 times watching Wentworth at her house (netflix). She asked me to fix her sink and then on the last date I helped her pain. Turns out she wanted to netflix and chill and I had no clue....I'm old fashioned I guess and like to get to know people before having sex.

Gave up after that and just started to try again due to covid. I'm losing weight and feeling better about myself, but still suck hard at dating. I was married from 26 till 45, and just seriously dated one girl before that. I am so not a dating expert and it's much harder now then in the past due to covid etc.

Oh well, it'll help when I finally move into town and can meet people easier. Also considering starting to go to church (not for religious reasons just to make friends and have a place where I can volunteer etc as well).

"Significant Other"? No.

New (and good) "Star Ocean"? Maybe. :)

Really, though, no. If a SO cares so little for you that they can't put up with your pet it won't work long term anyways.

But really really, though, my current dog is 16.5 years old. It's been a great run, but she's been pooping on the floor for a year and just started to pee on it, which is much worse. In this case I want my SO (and kids) to ask me to get rid of her...

When a girlfriend or boyfriend requests that it usually has nothing to do with the pet but is a control mechanism by the girlfriend or boyfriend.

there are a super rare case of exemptions like if they developed some kind of heart condition or cancer where their treatment required them to be in a sterile environment. Etc.

any s/o tgat has a problem w pets and lets the relationship develop to a serious point without laying that out early on is hoping to manipulate and change you and the pet thing is merely one manifestation of what is going to happen w other things too.

It seems to me that, 99% of the time, this scenario can only really occur if you already have the pet, and the SO is coming into the relationship after. In which case, I can't imagine actually developing a strong enough relationship with the SO before they made the ultimatum where I'd ever willingly side with them. Part of the process of falling in love/committing to someone in the first place would involve learning whether or not they're happy with/willing to tolerate pets (and by pets, I specifically mean dogs).

Though I have a visceral negative reaction to ultimatums and emotional blackmail in general, even when pets aren't involved. My instinctive response to "Either [x] goes or I go!" is "Well then don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, asshole." I view that sort of mentality as a blatant lack of respect, and it's a strong red flag for a toxic relationship.

I've actually ended relationships over emotional blackmail in the past. Part of why I'm happy in my current relationship is because we both have more respect for each other than that and don't pull that sort of shit with each other.

This is true. Though, some people really do try to make it seem like things are fine at first...

I agree. I'm not big on ultimatums... And I don't think many people are big on being emotionally blackmailed... And I agree that it's a red flag...

I don't have a pet anymore but if a SO asked me to do something like this they would be the one I get rid of not the pet. I don't like controlling people and that shit is wasted on me as I do what I want.

Nothing wrong with having casual fun with guys, girls or both. Personally I'd be more interested in a relationship and for sure would love to do more travelling. I'm not in the right position in my life to do any of those things at the moment though and I'm certainly not getting any younger.

If they make the demand because they don't like pets? Absolutely not. We're not compatible. Good-bye.

If they're allergic and it's a genuine health issue for them... it depends on a lot of factors. But it's not outside of the realm of possibility. Mind you, one of the deciding factors is that they have a safe place to live, and that I'd still be able to see them: I wouldn't drop them off at the animal shelter, but I might give them to my mom or something.

But first we'd try alternate methods, like allergy medication, or allergy injections (though those are more long-term).
