Current Events > The Gabby Petito case really highlights how grotesque the news cycle has become

Headlines like this:

  • What do we know about the case so far?
  • A timeline of missing 22 year old
  • 10 things you should know about Gabby Petito
  • Gabby Petito search warrant reveals "odd" final text to mother
  • FBI cart away possible evidence from Gabby Petito's fiance's home
Being real for a second, what does this actually matter to you, joe public? Do YOU need a blow by blow of every detail of the case, reported to the minute? As fucking tragic as this story is these details are really only relevant to a small amount of people. A person died, someone else probably killed her, the suspect is on the run. You don't need a tv special mini-documentary on their facebook history.

I'm not criticising people for caring. it's obviously horrible. But there's really something twisted about how these headlines are playing this whole thing like an HBO tv marathon. It's like a macabre competition to see who can come up with the most salacious spin on any given scrap of news.

Whatever dude.

Even the Petito family asked for the word to spread so they could find their daughter (which eventually led to finding answers for their daughter) so what you are arguing is essentially act in bad faith in spite of the victims families. Messed up

Stuff like this and how the media glorifies mass shooters makes me sick

But what can be done about it really? Its unfortunate that news outlets make more money off of doing sick shit like this and will continue to do so in the future

Daughter has been found. Now it's a deep look into the psyche of the killer type stuff without even a pause for breath. So no, I don't buy that for a second, whatever nice intentions some people had about spreading the word to find her originally.

Charlie Brooker's newswipe did a really good piece on this

Especially in that situation it feeds into the "infamous psycho" persona that mass shooters want to feel known for.

The fact that I'm hearing about it from colleagues in scotland and not just this message board speaks volumes of that.

They are trying. I don't think they'll find him alive at this point, but if they do I don't think they will succeed in bringing him in alive either. He might have just returned home to say his own personal goodbyes to life as he knew it before ending it all.

People got invested during the search so now theyre getting the follow up. Real weird take.

You don't think there's even anything a little bit weird about articles that give you a blow-by-blow "7 things you need to know about Brian Laundrie" type fluff?

Like I said, I don't blame anyone for being horrified by all this, or wanting to know the outcome. I think there's something really obscene about a news cycle that operates like this, though.

the problem with the subreddit culture of crimes like this is that more often than not they get it dead wrong and incriminate with little to no substantial evidence. Potentially damaging an innocent persons image.

and its why actual detectives and investigators despise this culture cause it can ruin leads and tip off potential suspects.

there are a few Netflix series about this internet sleuthing culture that makes you scratch your head.

It definitely has more to do with entertainment and ratings (and yes, missing white woman syndrome) than goodwill, even if some of its consequences (expanding awareness) are good

By comparison, I don't remember hearing the slightest about any of the dozens of missing black women within the last year
+1

There are over 700 missing native Americans (mostly women and girls) in the state where this woman was found.

I do get what you're saying and agree in a lot of situations, particularly with things like mass shootings like had been previously mentioned. But in this case, the vitality of the situation actually did help the investigation and will hopefully lead to justice and closure for the family. It's too bad that that usually isn't the case.

I suppose that's true.
