looking at ratemyprof for my masters program for a professor i already had, who was actually very knowledgeable and a prompt responder to emails, and almost every review (primarily from people taking his undergrad courses, not people in my program) is complaining about his thick russian accent and being completely unable to understand him

<_< i thought it was fine, maybe i'm biased from growing up around people who didn't speak english well but to be this distracted and put off by his accent suggests to me some sort of lack of mental fortitude or something

I mean, if I'm paying $100k for a college, the professor better be damn easy to understand. Taking notes and just following along can become a pain when you don't get everything the person is saying.

smart people wouldn't consider a thick accent to be a noteworthy inhibitor of this

I feel like this has been happening with new pharmacist at work. He's the boss and a goddamn veteran and some people just want to know where the actual Americans who speak English are that they can talk to. It's just an Indian accent.

Point being is paying a lot of money, $100k was just some random amount

People don't want to be paying a lot for something they aren't gonna get the full experience from.

Personally I don't think a Russian accent would be too hard to understand, but from the sound of it he has a very thick accent and is hard to understand for the average person, so they're not getting the full experience.

you don't understand, if i have to even SLIGHTLY strain myself to understand someone they basically aren't worth anything to me and can't possibly be doing their job well

i would find anyone pathetic who thinks they're capable of higher education but completely shuts down if asked to bear with a brilliant professor nonetheless instructing in a second language

Uh, this has nothing to do with being smart. You can understand a heavy accent if you pay close attention, constantly, for the whole lecture. Every lecture. When someone has an easier voice, you can still catch what they're saying when listening much less actively. And thinking about the concepts they're talking about is not exactly the same thing as thinking about the literal words they're saying.

Stop with the excuses. The answer to the topic is, Yes. Many people are impatient in general, but a thick accent makes it difficult to understand even when you put effort into carefully listening and being attentive. It is a distraction, regardless of the blame you want to place on those attending the class. On the flip side of what you seem to continue doing, you can just as easily say, Why didnt a professor that is smart learn to better speak to their primary audience and be more skilled at vocal adjustments.

I mean, if youre gonna act dumb with attitude about any response you get, dont bother asking.

I didn't say anything like that. If people have a hard time understanding a professor for any reason, whether it's an accent or just the person's general teaching style, it's totally ok for them to say so and for other people to use that information as they will. Not saying anyone shouldn't have their job over it, but if some students adjust their schedule in response, so be it.
Nope. No one should say anything and you should be stuck with it if you find yourself in that position. Bigots can adapt or fail their class in a hilarious way.

tl;dr the entire topic but this happens a lot for non-native minorities, especially Asians, and its usually just fucking racism.

You see a lot of "He barely speaks English!" --professor is a PhD who speaks fluent English with a very moderate accent.

Also RMP is a fucking cesspool and nobody should place any stock in it.

I've yet to encounter a professor with a supposedly "thick accent" that was actually "thick" to the point of not being understandable and not just a normal accent.
