Raducanu wins!

Unbelievable final. Both 18 years old, both played brilliantly

Raducanu has gone the whole way through the tournament including three qualifiers without dropping a set

Outrageous achievement

Totally amazing. At least women's tennis seems to be interesting for the forseeable future, unlike the men's game which will probably be Novak domination for at least another year.

I will say that Raducanu never had to play someone ranked higher than 11, I think. Something is up with women's tennis seedings.

I hope Raducanu and Fernandez are around for a long time.

I hope to see great matches between Raducanu, Gauff and Fernandez (at least) for the next 10-15 years

That wasn't even a great match for two players of their age and rank, it was just a really really great fucking match

Fantastic win. Unreal.

Such an amazing match from both player.

Raducanu is a total machine.

Us Brits have waited so long for a female grand slam champ and what a way for her to do it.

Somehow the story of potentially the first calendar-year grand slam since 1988(I think?) is the less exciting tennis story of the weekend.

Pretty crazy, but well-deserved.

Yeah, Graf in 1988 for women's singles. 1969 for Laver for the men.

Yeah. Djokovic winning tomorrow would be a very rare achievement. But what Raducanu did is unique

I don't know exactly the bracket layout but women's tennis seems pretty common for higher seeds losing. I think that's more on the players than it is the seedings. If those higher seeds had won then she'd have had to play one of them at some point.

I think it has nothing to do with how they seed or how the bracket is done. It's done in the same way as the mens game. Its more to do, in my opinion, with how good the womens game is.

There are no dominant forces at the top now that Serena doesn't win consistently like she used to. And that's not necessarily because noone is good enough to step in, but IMO because the top 50 especially (but also some people below that) are quality players of similar calibur. A lot of players can win at any given time. I do think there will be a few who split out and become dominant but I'm not 100% sure who they will be. Which is exciting.

In the men's game however, it's prwtty much Djokovic....then Federer/Murray/Nadal if they were to be at top of their game.....then a few others in the top 10......then everyone else.

Women's tennis is more prone to it because it's best of 3 rather than 5. Look at how many times Djokovic has come from behind to win in 5 sets. If it were women's rules he'd be out.

Also the men's game has had a pretty unprecedented era of dominance over the last 20 years. So it's always going to make the women's game look more unpredictable. I mean it is but that makes it look worse

Literally nothing would make me happier than a Medved win today, but I'd bet my life on a Djokovic win.

I mean, I guess if Djokovic was going to lose it was going to be because he didn't show up. it's almost harder to imagine him losing in a close one than just collapsing altogether, if that makes any sense

Could just be hindsight talking though, probably is

medvedev is so goofy man

like maybe it's cause he won in straights but he seems oddly casual about this whole thing

I like it but it's also weirdly unsettling

Had a feeling Djokovic would lose it, there was a lot more pressure on him compared to Medvedev. Still did very well to get so close to it. I can't see anyone getting the calendar year grand slam again any time soon, there's just too many players who can win on their day now. Yes, I know Dylan Alcott just won all 4, plus the Olympics gold this year, but there is a lot less competition in the wheelchairs - still a really good effort.

also I'm pretty sure medvedev just made some sort of gaming reference.

he said the move he did after he won "only legends would understand, it's L2 plus left"

the move he did was like a quick fall onto the side

what in the world
