Game of thrones, anime isekai are all fantasy now. All these fantasy shows are big.

Only scifi still relevant is superhero stuff

Marvel kinda ruined sci-fi stuff unless it's stupid high budget now. It'll get back to normal soon.

This is just how the cycle goes, scifi will be coming back around, fantasy is having its turn thats all.

Go look at the 80s, and 90s to see the cycle then check out early 2000s.

Scifi always tries to include some bullshit explanation for the science behind whatever is happening and it's usually obviously impossible. Basically it's too easy to get distracted nitpicking. With fantasy you only need an explanation if it happens to someone in the "real world" and even then the explanation can just be "it's magic."

Not only that, you get elves, witches, monster girls, robot girls, angels, devils, apoptosis, meanwhile scifi's best are alien chicks who are just human looking women with either extra spots or non human colors like blue or green or something, if anything, scifi has been absorbed into fantasy since it can't carry itself on it's own.

Scarlet Nexus, the anime, is sci-fi. The new Dune movie is sci-fi, and it's doing well

Modern Science Fiction is nothing but Spaghetti Western action with space ships. I loved Blade Runner 2049.

Western fantasy shows and movies have never really had a "time." They've just been sprinkled in, in a small number, fairly consistently for forever

80s had some good fantasy movies. Legend, Dragon Slayer, Conan, etc

90s had Dragonheart and Hercules/Xena

2000s had Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter

As for the last 10 years, idk other than Hobbit and GoT. Seems like the 20s will have some shows like Witcher, whatever the LotR thing is, and Wheel of Time

Fantasy works well for TV as you can get away with a smaller budget. Most fantasy kind of bombs on the big screen, though.

90s and 2000s was an era of YEC

We had the Harry Potter books/movies, the LotR movies, and GoT which all got people more interested in the genre with their popularity.

Game of Thrones was a well done adaption of a book published in1996. And as soon as it was done. Media companies just started buying the rights to every single property. But they forget that Game of Thrones was (at least at first) a loving and well done adaption of the material, and dont put nearly the budget or effort into it and it fails. Eventually enough series either end or fail and something big comes along and they jump on that to make the next cycle.

Media companies dont want to put in that work so they instead try to copy with something similar.

We went through this with the young adult dystopian novel in Hunger Games and the slew of half assed adaptions that followed (Divergent and Maze Runner are two I can remember but I know there were more). We also saw it with the MCU and connected universes.

Just gotta wait until there is a popular enough Sci-fi adaption to grab the mainstream attention. Very few companies want to be the first

^Pretty much sums it up. Fantasy became a big thing because Game of Thrones got popular. If The Expanse had been the cultural phenomenon instead of GoT, they'd be shitting out loads of scifi media instead.

I mean we still do have a lot of sci-fi media too.

excluding MCU and stuff we still had interstellar, Martian, arrival, gravity, riddick, a bunch of horror films and some shows, mainly streaming originals though.

It might not be at the absolute forefront or have a franchise doing insanely well but as a whole the genre is still pumping out constant content.

edit: as for fantasy, we saw it really only become popular like 20 years ago so theres a lot of situations where people who always wished they had fantasy media is now making said media.
