I wonder how many people calling for LeVar Burton even actually watched him. I didn't see him either so I have no personal opinion on it, but I remember lots of people stumping for him before he was even announced, so I'm skeptical. If he was good then I'd have no problem with it, but if he was bad as people are saying, then you gotta take that into consideration

He's definitely more of a meme pick. I'd be more interested in what the actual Jeopardy audience thinks, rather than people with Reading Rainbow nostalgia.

I have no idea whether or not he's a racist, but apparently there are recordings of him using racial slurs so it's a distinct possibility.

And if you ever saw Jeopardy episodes from the first few years he was host they are like night and day compared to later years. It took him a long time but he eventually learned how to do it.

I was wondering this, tbh... Sometimes, a host might not be the best when they first start, but they may grow into the role... Like maybe LeVar Burton could grow into it... Idk...

Well Jeopardy is one of the harder shows to host, rapid fire trivia that doesn't give a lot of time for the host to recalibrate. It's the stark opposite of Who Want's to be a Millionaire, where every question after the first few which are ridiculously easy takes up 3-4 minutes of screen time.

Shit the host is incentivized to keep it going fast to try to clear as much of the board as possible also. Since, once time is running out they move straight on to the Final Jeopardy thing.

While it's nice that you know a lot about Canada, there are still five other trivia categories you need to compete in to become Jeopardy host.

That's okay I'm willing to learn on the job.

On the LeVar episodes they only missed five questions, four from his first day, and one on his second, by the third he had picked up the pace and they got to all Double Jeopardy questions within the time allowed. (show 8451 - 8455)

I think with more time and practice he would have further refined his style and cadence.

I did like him in the Barclay episode and his interactions with Data, but he got loads of shitty character episodes like that episode where he was transforming into an invisible alien. As far as engineers go, O'Brian, Belana had better character episodes. Trip had some good ones, but I can't stand Trip, so that doesn't count for much. So, yeah, mostly "we have a warp core breach" from him.

That's incredibly disingenuous.

A Bri post that's disingenuous?

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, oh wait...

Who cares, his selection was a farce to begin with and nobody liked this guy. It's not going to set some kind of precedent because this thing already happens and there is already little consistency to "cancel culture".

I definitely think there's an element of them wanting to walk back a bad decision without necessarily acknowledging why it was such a big screw-up, this was just a convenient excuse

No, Mike Richards was fine with the stupid decision because Mike Richards was behind the stupid decision. If not for this, the stupid decision would have lasted. And again, Mike Richards DQ'd Jennings over far, far, far less than anything he did -- even if you take the lawsuits off the table -- so the controversy is pretty damn relevant. You can't say "Well, this guy has the wrong image because he made a comment that's somewhat disparaging to the disabled," and then give it to a guy who makes snide remarks about Jews, who makes eye-raising remarks about women *on* and off the set (although the on goes back to some of his lawsuits), etc. You can't play the virtue card to DQ one person then have the replacement be a million times worse. This was 100% because of the controversy.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
The problem is that the sort of people who tend to push that sort of philosophy hardest rarely seem to think that it applies to them as well.

Yeah, the hypocrisy of that guy saying "Be a decent human" is lost on fucking no one.

If I became famous I'd probably be cancelled by idiots with time machines who'd find out that I used homophobic slurs as insults back in 2000 when I was 12

Mike Richards was a grown-ass man who made some of his remarks on the job, got sued for it, and Sony was just going to brush it under the table before this. And again, this was the guy who DQ'd Jennings for tweets that didn't come close to anything he did, and Jennings never needed his company to settle lawsuits for his misconduct (and was never even sued for misconduct)

Not really comparable to your hypothetical.

CENSOR BYPASS POSTED...
Aaron Rodgers did surprisingly well, he was prepared, he was quick to respond; I didn't have high expectations for his two week stint but he really did a good job. A couple of the guest hosts could potentially live up to the expectations of the job, but Aaron was by far, the best of the bunch.

People are even calling for him to return to host, and he is apparently willing to do so.

He kept mispronouncing shit and he was awkward as hell.

11110111011 posted...
His Reading Rainbow cadence was all wrong and came off as a little condescending, he blatantly made several mistakes, and was often slow to confirm right or wrong responses, slowing the pace of the game and intruding on contestants' response windows on re-rings.

LaVar wasn't THE worst guest host, but he was definitely bottom tier.

I love LeVar, but he was a little slow. Plus he's really too old for this. Honestly, the *only* logical picks were Ken or Mayim (or Buzzy), and Mayim has other commitments.

Honestly, they should go with a high-profile Jeopardy star and call it a day. Ken works, Buzzy works, Brad Rutter works, etc.

I wound up only catching the second half of most of his games. I liked him a lot, but... I did think he was a little slow in answering.

He's probably not the best guy for the role, but... c'mon, it's LeVar Burton!

LeVar is too old for that. He's 64 now, so he'd only be there maybe 5-10 years.

Quick update: Now Jeopardy has *really* gotten rid of him.

https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/mike-richards-fired-executive-producer-jeopardy-wheel-of-fortune-1235052887/

Sony has fired Mike Richards as the executive producer of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Michael Davies, the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire executive producer whose Embassy Row shingle is based at Sony, will take over production duties in the interim.

Richards gave up the job as host after ugly statements that he had made on an eight-year-old podcast series resurface, and that followed concerns over the host selection process with whispers that Richards, as host, was able to calibrate the search to replace Trebek in his favor. And it also came following the unearthing of discrimination lawsuits that multiple models working on Price Is Right, which he had produced at the time, filed in 2010 and 2011.

By the way, those whispers get even more damning considering that:

Richards took over as executive producer on both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! in 2020, after the exit of longtime executive producer Harry Friedman, who announced in August 2019 that he would be stepping down when his contract expired. Friedman had run Wheel of Fortune since 1995 and Jeopardy! since 1997.

Guy took over as exec producer in 2020 then almost immediately manipulated shit to give himself the job, while forcing out the host people actually wanted over a minor scandal despite having a history far worse than anything the guy he shoved aside did.

What a piece of shit. Happy to see him gone.
