Kind of ironic the top states for child marriages are in RED STATES when QAnon accused liberals of being PEDOPHILES and are in secret child trafficking rings.

North Carolina is set to pass a law raising the minimum age that people can get married from 14 to 16 and will also ban 16 y/o's from marrying anyone older than 20!!

Teens will need parental permission or a judge's decision that marriage would serve the best interest of an underage party as 6 states have banned it altogether but change has been slow in this state where some are convinced that certain marriages involving children are acceptable

Republican Vickie Sawyer says "It's a generational divide. It was older members, both Democrats and Republicans that had those personal stories of family members who had been married and it turned out OK"

2/3 of marriage applications in Buncombe County last year were filed by non residents seeking to marry an underage person as Drew Reisinger noted that a 49 y/o man was marrying a 17 y/o girl who came from KENTUCKY to get married.

He said the county is a hot desintation for older man who want to marry child brides from nearby states such as Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee all of which who raised the age in recent years....

North Carolina is one of the friendliest states for this that gives them a safe haven

It is one of only 14 that allow children under 16 to get married as 9 of those states doesn't even have a minimum age

Almost all of the US allows some form of child marriage except Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Rhode Island

Alaska is the only other state whose law expressly allows marriages as young as 14...

Rep. Kristin Baker a conservative Christian also helped sponsor this bill who says is a strong supporter of the sacrament of marriage but as a child psychiatrist is determined to protect vulnerable youth by raising the age

Democrat Roy Cooper is expected to sign the bill once it passes the senate as New York was most recently who banned marriages under 18

Does it surprise you that Red States have the highest proportion of child marriages?

Red states are typically more rural. Typically those who grow up in rural communities marry early because they don't pursue higher education. Where I used to live many couples were married before leaving high school. Many teen pregnancies happened too. There is also the religious belief you need to be married for six, so some teens marry for that

It's weird that you conflate marriage with sex offenders, particularly when marriages involving one youth generally is to another youth. These laws are generally there because it was custom for 14 y/os to marry 14 y/os. And the laws typically changed in those other states BECAUSE abuse was so rampant. NY, Massachusetts, etc, were infamous for their child sex trafficking in the past.

However, when you look at the map, the actual AOC across the US is generally 16, with only a few states going higher. Marriage is the only real exception in some states.

Yeah, plus the rural/urban divide plays a factor. When it's in an urban setting, there's definitely something flukier going on because that's outside the norms.

Those people are often racist, sexist, and discriminatory in many ways as well as arrogant and hypocritic. I don't think people under 18 should be getting married. Actually, they shouldn't even be thinking about romance and other related things. Even getting married in the late teens and early twenties is too early to me.

In addition to the general low minimum ages for marriage in the USA, many states allow for marriages at appallingly young ages so long as the parents want it done and/or a girl is pregnant :-/, with some states having NO MINIMUM in this case (used to be a lot more that had this, but advocacy groups have made a little progress on this front). These two caveats paired together clearly exist to facilitate giving a child to the rapists that impregnated them.
