I tested it and I can hum just as well with my mouth puckered a bit (almost like your gonna kiss someone) but my nose pinched, as I can without my nose pinched. It takes like a second to master it, but you can totally hum like that. Your lips still vibrate etc (you just have to have some way for the air to escape, but still have most of your lips touching. I would imagine using a straw would also work.

If air is escaping through your mouth, then its probably not the same as a normal hum. I think they are just talking about average humming either way, its not really a contest
