nah the last 30 minutes whip ass. i feel like it really emphasizes the cruelty of the 'imprinting' process they force david to go through at the beginning

This is probably a large part of the problem.

Kubrick was making a Kubrick film, which means it was probably going to be fairly dark and pretty confusing. Then he died, and Spielberg came in, and Spielberg'd the whole thing up.

The result is a clash of styles, and it probably isn't helped by the fact that only about half the plot comes from the original short story it was based on, and the rest was just made up for the movie.

It's kind of a mess of ideas that don't all necessarily work well together, that meanders a bit, shifts in tone, and then, bam, weird ending.

i mean people say this a lot but it's not really true from what's public about the production of the film. the beginning and ending pretty much match what kubrick wanted, and spielberg fleshed out darker middle part of the movie with the flesh fairs and so on

I enjoyed it but it didn't make sense. The emotional impact that it was going for was undermined by the way that they just handwaved giving "emotion" to a robot with no explanation of what that even meant and no real understanding for the viewer that the robot was conscious or anything. it seemed to just be an automaton that happened to emulate having emotions, and fairly badly.

a much better film that explores similar ideas with a lot more thought put into it is Bicentennial Man.

actually, Terminator 2 is a much better exploration of AI as well.

really, what should be the whole point of the movie (exploring the concept of AI) is missed practically right out of the gate by not establishing what makes the protagonist anything more than a robot. maybe it's the performance, can't remember, but you never get the sense that there is anything more than a mindless machine there. even Arnie in T2 was able to convey an artificial consciousness trying to understand humans and humanity. HJO never acted like anything more than a mindless robot with some badly written emotion subroutines.

But enough about the Sixth Sense. His job or role in AI was nothing to write about either.

yeah it's not really a movie about AI. the hollowness of david, being driven only by irrational desire he has no control over, is kind of the point imo

I actually liked the ending when he's finally reunited with his mom.
And yes. Teddy is the best.
