Kubrick was making a Kubrick film, which means it was probably going to be fairly dark and pretty confusing. Then he died, and Spielberg came in, and Spielberg'd the whole thing up. The result is a clash of styles, and it probably isn't helped by the fact that only about half the plot comes from the original short story it was based on, and the rest was just made up for the movie.
