Which world are you at?

I don't think I could have done something like this before I got into competitive smash. Trying to get really good at a fighting game creates, like, a new mindset to be able to endure really harsh conditions. Cause you have to do things that at first you're like "well that's dummy hard." Like most single player games now look to me like things basically designed to make you win. Truly unfair video games like GnG somewhat captures how unfair it feels to play against a stupid good player.

Not like it was a great game or anything. I needed a guide to teach me how to get around glitches and I looked up videos of people playing the game to see how they dealt with the red demons.

8. I've been struggling at least mildly since fairly early. For what it's worth, in World 7 I built up 46 lives on a level that was really easy to get 1-ups on, and by the end of the world I was down to 10. Now I'm down to 2 and I HATE "continuing" on Mario games since you just start over from where you saved anyway.

Nice job! I've always been meaning to beat GnG, but I've just never liked the game enough to play it that much.

Volgarr the Viking is actual great game that is heavily inspired by GnG though, if that is something that interests anyone. It's got a very nice difficulty to it as well.

Are you intentionally not using P-Wings? Because all of the World 8 stages are very easy with P-Wings, particularly those 2 stages on the part of the map that is totally in the dark that have a couple tricky jumps.

That's up to you to decide, as it depends on what you are going for! If you are trying to beat every stage, obviously clouds negate that. P-wings aren't exactly a guarantee since they just won't work well on some stages, and the ones that they do, whether you consider pressing 1 button over and over to be cheating is up to you. Once you get into questions like that, you can make a case for "is every powerup cheating?", which just gets into making up your own challenges. Which is fun to do for games anyway! So who knows!

I never got to world 8 as a kid, so I generally game over there and have to do it on a single continue.

Volgarr is waayyyyy more inspired by Rastan Saga than GnG

If you want something more in line with GnG there is Maldita Castilla (aka Cursed Castilla EX) and Battle Princess Madelyn

I've played Cursed Castilla, but have not played a Rastan game or Battle Princess Madelyn. I will have to check them out. Thanks for the recs!

I don't doubt Volgarr being more inspired by Rastan, but it really feels a ton like GnG to me as well, and a lot of reviews of Volgarr mention both GnG and Rastan! The sword swinging of course isn't in GnG, but the way the jumping feels, as well as the spear throwing, damage, and difficulty very heavily feels like GnG to me more than just about anything I've played. Of course I'm sure it applies more to Rastan as you say.

I beat it once years ago on an emulator, using savestates only at the start of each level.

Then I made another attempt on my [3DS Virtual Console]. But near the end of the last level I would encounter two of those flying red devils at the same time. I just wanted to ask if this is normal, and if so, how on EARTH can you take on two of them at the same time?

The game has infinite continues though. I technically had a save state at the title screen with the Continue option for whenever I closed the emulator, but that's identical to just leaving for NES on.

Yeah I had to use a guide for that part which told me how the red devils in that area were activated.

There's a part where when you climb a ladder, one red devil gets activated, but then when you continue, a glitch makes another one act when it's not supposed to. So you activate the first one, you climb back down instead to fight it, and then you have to backtrack to a previous ladder to resolve the glitch before continuing.
