Do you think an asteroid will hit Earth during YOUR lifetime??
Vote
Scientists have been watching a huge asteroid named BENNU for awhile now as the good news is that they say this asteroid is still unlikely to hit earth..the bad news is that there is now a slightly GREATER chance of it clobbering earth than previously thought!! Scientists say not to be alarmed from that cause the odds are still quite low than Bennu will hit earth in the next CENTURY David Farnocchia said "We shouldn't be worried too much" who is a scientists with NASA's Centre for Near Earth Object Studies The odds have risen from 1 in 2700 to 1 in 1750 over the next century or two They are collecting samples with a spacecraft heading back to earth on a long, roundabout loop from the large, spinning rubbile pile of asteroid considered one of the 2 most hazardous known asteroids in the solar system and is de back in 2023 It will show over the 2 and a half years how scientists can determine whether its orbital path well hit earth in the future. The year 2300 is when everyone alive today will be dead but for the future generation may have some panic.. In the meantime, Bennu will have a close encounter with Earth in 2135 IF Bennu does hit earth, it wouldn't wipe out dinosaur style poulations but rather create a crater roughly 10-20 times on earth's surface Do you think an asteroid will hit earth in YOUR lifetime? https://i.imgur.com/Ysav2Y2.jpg https://i.imgur.com/TA9yQjU.png --- The Users have Spoken. Still pretty damn low odds, I have no clue what the state of humanity will look like in 200 years anyways. This type of thing might be far less worrisome if the entire world is a shit hole at that point.

101955 Bennu 0.057% chance of Earth impact 1 in 1,800 odds of impact 99.943% chance the asteroid will miss the Earth Mass: 7.4e+10 kg Impact Energy: 1,400 Mt Impact year range: 2178-2290 There are other asteroids that are more likely to hit the Earth. 2010 RF12 has the highest cumulative probability of 4.7%, 1 in 21 or 95.3% chance of missing the Earth, between 2095-2120. But at only 500,000 kg and an impact energy of just 9 kt, it's about half the size of the Little Boy nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The most dangerous asteroid in terms of impact energy is 29075, with a cumulative impact probability of 0.012%, 1 in 8,300 or 99.988% against, on March 16, 2880. With a mass of 2.0e+12 kg, it would hit the Earth with the force of 74,000 Mt or about 148 Tzar Bombas. --- Minutus cantorum, minutus balorum, Minutus carborata descendum pantorum. ... about 148 Tzar Bombas. captpackrat posted... impact energy of 230 ktthis is interesting. so, many asteroids would basically just be like dropping a nuke at a completely random place. if a world-ending asteroid was 100% guaranteed to hit the earth, I could easily see a global effort working at any cost to stop it. but, if an atom bomb size asteroid was 10% likely to hit the earth... I doubt we'd ever do anything about it. that somehow seems a bit more plausible as a catastrophic scenario. we're so lazy that we don't stop the low-damage asteroid that only might hit us, which of course proceeds to hit one of the worst places possible. --- ... Do I think one will hit Earth in my lifetime? Yes. But here's the thing. I'm just going for any asteroid. That includes all those tiny space rocks that 'hit' earth and basically just fall from orbit and maybe kill a squirrel at most if they're 'lucky'. The kind where a small furrow dug is the most damage they could possibly do if even that. If you're referring to the kind that leaves huge craters and what-not than no. I don't.
