The WMDs shit was more of a side quest, like catching a legendary in Pokemon

Afghanistan is more like grinding on Zubats for hours until you run out of PP and your save gets corrupted

Fair enough, but I wouldnt call a 20 year old invasion current.

Anyway, the general consensus is that the invasion of Afghanistan was a result of 9/11. The invasion of Iraq was based on the regimes alleged (and false, depending on public definition) possession of WMDs.
