Master Kazuya 08/10/21 8:23:17 PM #1:	It is the complete opposite of whatever subtleness is, or an inference, or intuition, etc. Anime doesn't know how to invoke feelings without being EXTREMELY overt about what's going on. As if it's being written for bots trying to understand how humans work. Someone is intelligent? Let's make them able to know exactly every move in advance and literally call out everything either ahead of time or call it out to a ridiculous degree once it's over. Someone likes food? They will eat in every single scene, literally gorge themselves nonstop, and that will be the premise of their character. The food guy. I need to feel bad for someone? Let's give them the fucking most depressing backstory in the world, so sad that we need to keep flashing back to it. In a normal story, it might be something like "mom would be proud", but in anime it's like "my mom was the ONLY THING I HAD!!! she BELIEVED IN ME!!! she gave me the POWER to BELIEVE IN MYSELF!!!" Someone has strong ideals they believe in? It must be rooted in that backstory and they must scream it with tears in their eyes every time it gets challenged, instead of you know, showing it with what they do. Everything is measured in percents. I don't need to know the chances of something working, the amount of percentage that's behind an attack, how much percent you are holding back. These are fucking lazy ways to storytell. You should be able to convey it through context and narrative. I don't need a stat tracker announced to me to figure out this guy is trying harder or not. "now going to HYAKU PAHCENTO". Who the hell announces they are going to go into 100% of something? You just do it. Love? It is just all so dramatic and all so telegraphed that it gives me no room to sit with it myself since it's screaming everything it hopes I feel at me. See Gordan Ramsey in America vs Britain. The British version just lets the people speak for themselves, the American show is full of weird clangs and noises and sirens and shit in the background. Rom coms do this sometimes too, they make love stories out of actually psychotic people. They'll have characters basically giving a forced backstory like it's just an ordinary conversation, but nobody would talk like that to each other. I'm more forgiving if it's a first-person narration to the audience, but it irritates me when characters speak to each other like that. These are things the person they're talking to already know, so there's no need to give so many specific details like they're learning of it for the first time. The best example of an actual thing I can give of is amusingly, Big Hero 6, which wanted so badly to be half Japanese homegrown anime, that they even got down terrible exposition at the very beginning of the movie when Hiro and his brother are running away from the gang members and his brother's like, "I know you graduated top of your class, and you're a genius wonderkid, but don't you have something better to spend your time doing?" I fucking hate that kind of shit with a passion. Again, it's not that bad when the main character's disembodied voice is plainly narrating to the audience, but the alternative is terrible. Because those anime ate targeted at prepubescent boys. They can still be an entertaining watch, but that's mainly what you're going to get from the big action anime. Check out something like Baccano. It takes place in prohibition era USA and the English dubs really nail the "Italian mobster" accent. Baccano tells the story through the eyes of about a dozen characters.
