Why am I surprised to have this much pushback against the universally acknowledged (amongst health professionals) benefit of small changes to your daily life that increase activity for otherwise sedentary people?

Because you literally said it would help with the obesity problem. By itself that is false. And that was the main point we where arguing against. 5 minutes of extra walking every week or every other week (hell I know people who do a whole months worth of grocery shopping in one go) isnt going to make a noticable dent

Habits such as this do help, as I said, even though they won't solve entirely on its own. Your inability to acknowledge that tells me I can promptly ignore your input regarding weight interventions.

You kinda added the other shit after. And nobody im aware of disagreed with what you added other than maybe saying without a proper diet it wasnt gonna make much difference either on weight loss. We where not discussing other health benefits you moved the goal posts so to speak. It went from simply walking to the store to a well you gotta make other small changes too.

Yeah. We have a few pretty big people at my job. Some of them who are walking up and down the flight line all day. But some of those big boys can move. Everybody who saw them at a back to basics said those big boys were movin!

Excuse me if I enjoy my car and going where/when I want and getting to stay away from all the smelly weirdos and homeless people jerking off and screaming at strangers on busses.

I generally drive from Florida to the Chicago area straight through once a year to visit family. My car gets 45-50mpg highway, and it is cheaper and less hassle than airplane tickets for the fam and a rental car (which I would need because who the fuck travels somewhere to stay in one place. Even visiting friends for me requires an hours drive sometimes)

You guys live in some fantasy land where not only are buses clean and safe and lovely to ride on, but that there's a bus that on command will take you exactly where you need to at any given moment.

Ugh, it's like none of you have ever worked in retail, a gas station, or fast food. It is a treat and pleasure to get to avoid the disgustingly idiotic and rude general populous by having personal transportation. My skin crawls just thinking about having to lower myself to get on the bus with a bunch of gross "public transportation" people that are like they were from people of Walmart dot Com but 100x worse and deal with the fucking bums and crazies

This is an absolutely disgusting post. There are tactful ways to say you're concerned about safety on public transportation instead of just being like "I don't wanna go near those gross poors".

The reason people like that exist is due to a lot of the same kind of decision making that led to our poor city planning in the first place anyway. Hopefully you'd assume if we ever re-focus there, we get actual attempts to address income inequality too. Plus as adjl said if you have more people in general using transit you should feel safer

He aint gonna beat me though. There was literally a rumor at basic that I was gay cause of how fast I walked. Didnt even know that sterotype existed until then. One girl was nice enough to clue me in on the whole ordeal.

See at basic when we would do our seld defense courses we had to walk down this steep hill to get to the room we trained in. After we had to walk back up it to get back to the classroom. Fat lazy instructors drove their cars (which was fair when they had to carry equipment like batons) id beat them back to the class room despite them driving.

I think this problem. Not all cities have a decent one. My city is ok. But we dont have a ton of buses. So, we have 8 routes around the city. And its an hour per route. So, if you miss the bus, you have an hour before the next one

That is the core of the issue. There's a vicious cycle wherein people don't use transit when the service isn't good enough, which leads to cuts in transit services because there aren't enough passengers to support them. Many places do have absolutely terrible transit systems that are in no way an acceptable substitute for driving (heck, a few years ago here, many employers were outright refusing to hire people that relied on buses because they were so unreliable). So long as efforts to improve service aren't made, though, the demand will never be there. A serious commitment has to be made to making transit a viable alternative to driving before people will even give it a chance.

Nobody would, but sometimes, practical limitations demand giving up conveniences, especially when you start scaling them up such that everybody has them. If money were no object, I'm sure we'd all love to be taken door to door by a personal helicopter because that would be super convenient, but if everybody tried to do that, the air traffic would be so bad that a lot of the potential time savings would be lost and there'd be no room to land. That's obviously an extreme hypothetical scenario with no chance of ever being realized, but it's reasonably analogous: Giving everyone the convenience of using a personal car for everything has created massive inefficiencies and introduced new inconveniences that ultimately make for a worse experience.

We still have a ton of people using the service. We just dont get any money Its a cheap service already, so the money is nowhere near enough to fuel us. But then, many people get discounts for medical reasons And senior discounts

For me, it depends on the inconvenience I dont mind looking for parking spaces. But I dont want to walk from the bus stops or wait when I want to go somewhere at a specific time

Like when Los Angeles decided it was a good idea to contract out all bus service to General Motors, because it's not like they would have an ulterior motive to run the system into the ground to force people to buy more cars [spoiler alert: they did have an ulterior motive to run the transit system into the ground]

If they service poor areas that can't afford the tech, then I guess, but up here all emergency services have access to it on their vehicles and most major city centres have the receivers on their shops with many municipalities receiving funding to upgrade their systems; it cuts down an accidents caused in transit to the service call, and saves lives.

I typically bike when I have to go into the office. I used to bus when weather didn't permit biking (mostly just winter, I can put up with rain easily enough), but I've been avoiding that this past year because of Covid (buses have made up a considerable number of our high-risk exposures) and walking instead.

Walking from a corner of a Walmart parking lot would barely take 3 minutes. It would probably take about 2 minutes longer at a Costco one. There's no actual benefit for that since if they need the exercise then they should be walking for at least 30 minutes.

According to Google, 16 miles is the average Of course, depending on where you live, things can be different. Like if you live further away from many places, people probably travel further. But according to Google, people average 16 miles. That would probably include the people that live close and further away

Depends on which city, and how youre getting around. Like for my job, if we dont count the people that live on base, most live with 20-30 minutes of the base. And a good chunk of those live about 10 minutes away in the complex pretty close to base The time for the 16 miles might change. But I dont think most cities would make it take 45-60 minutes to travel 16 miles. Maybe New York or something. But not most places

Neither did I. It's akin to Calgary in some ways and Calgary has them on all their Emergency Vehicles and outfitted the bus portion of the transit system with them.

Southern Ontario is covered where lights control the crossing.

It's not just a DFW issue, its a national issue of antiquated infrastructure, spurned by decades of conservative austerity.
