I may be a Fallout noob, only having played Fallout 3 for maybe 5 hours and Fallout New Vegas for 2 hours ( I will resume this when I beat Fallout 4)...
... but there is nothing wrong with Fallout 4. It's a good game.

Gameplay wise it's good but the world, story and characters are just all so bland and forgettable. I didn't care about anything that was happening

With a really bad main story and weird PC voice acting. The voice acting itself is fine but doesn't work well for roleplaying anything outside a goody goody

If you treat it as a standard open world shooter then yeah it's not bad. The shooting and exploring is fun enough.

Fallout 4 was trash.

Terrible writing, terrible missions, repetitive enemy encounters, broken stealth mechanics (in a bad way, at least for me).

While I agree, even if Bethesda did exactly this critics would write it off as being lazy.

New Vegas is a very flat game with little verticality. Fallout 4 is the only Fallout game to address this in both scale of enemies and level design.

I'm a fan of Fallout 4 despite it's shortcomings but even I'm not going to pretend that Fallout:NV is a perfect game, despite the praise it rightfully receives.

Far Harbor was a better Fallout game than Fallout 4. Proper factions with different branching choices that actually matter.

I'm replaying after a couple years and playing 3 and NV in-between. I enjoy everything but the quests. They're tedious at this point.

I am enjoying the crafting aspect which I pretty much ignored entirely my first play through.

It's a cool feature and it adds to the game but it's not what fans of the series really wanted.

It feels like it was shoehorned in (as I'm sure it probably was) and it's a poor consolation prize when compared to what we could have gotten and what was expected.

Probably because no modern Windows OS can even play the first two Fallout games properly without hunting for patches.

Most copies of the game come with all the patches already in em, iirc

I don't want to say they are bad games by any means but they are extremely dated and most gamers simply don't have the patience for turn-based point and click adventure games in 2021. That's aside from jumping through technical hoops to even get the game running.

Even New Vegas is extremely dated, making Fallout 3 nearly unplayable.

My experience with one of the early Fallout games was dying several times trying to leave the tutorial area, finally making it out of the tutorial area, reaching a town where the guard told me to put away my gun, I put away my gun (or so I thought) and walked into town and everyone attacked me and I died. And it didn't have auto-saving so all my progress was lost.

Or simply not liking the style of the game.

Not everybody can get into games that have dated mechanics, regardless of them being masterpieces in the eyes of the gaming community.

I'll admit that the awesome lore is hardly a tantalizing enough carrot to slog through a pixelated jumble of a game with stop and go action pacing. They are both classics but neither exactly hold up as well as say Super Mario Bros.

Let's not kid ourselves here.

Somewhat clunky menuing, sure, but the pacing isn't even "action", it's realtime with properly integrated turn-based combat that has yet to be properly matched in said integration.

Of course its a good game. It just didnt quite live up to 3 and NV. If I had a system that could play it, I would play it for sure.

Fun Tidbit: Abernathy Farm(near Sanctuary) has the highest build ceiling in the game, at over 20 stories. It's higher than the red-and-white power transmission towers.

If airships are your thing though, there are a few mods that add airship homes to the game. At least one of them allows the ship to 'relocate' to several pre-defined locations.

Had fun with the gameplay and just wandering around doing stuff as it popped up. Main story did nothing to drag me in and I only did it when my quest log was down to stupid repeating radiant quests.

i had a blast with it, personally. i got creative with it, i made a secure test chamber at The Castle for that teleporter thing, a Minutemen Embassy to the BoS at Boston Airport, a historically inspired abbey at Abernathy farms, among other themed builds. any time i've heard people complaining about how bad the settlement building was, it always turns out that all they ever did with it was build farming shanty towns. no wonder they didn't get much out of it.

The actual building aspect can be a blast, and I myself have spent countless hours on it. Where it drops the ball is when you throw settlers / NPCs into the mix, and how little in-game return there is on the mechanic. NPC pathfinding is already bad enough in Bethesda games, so throw in self-created structures and you've got NPCs constantly glitching through ceilings or getting stuck on walls because they're shooting for the shortest distance between themselves and their next sandbox objective. Settlement building is there for its own sake, and while it's something I've wanted in these games since Oblivion and was plenty enamored with it myself, I can't blame others for not finding any value in it.
